ParticipantTG: That has to be one of the funniest posts I have seen in a while.
BTW, I love “Defending Your Life”. Pretty much anything with Albert Brooks is funny. Talk about a mensch.

Participantbsrsharma: Just curious about something. Why do you presume that Chrysler will never again make consistent profits? If I were to guess at this, I would cite a couple of factors: Too much dependence on big, gas guzzling SUVs (the Durango and the Aspen come to mind) and trucks, and a lack of investment in hybrid and fuel cell technology.
However, they’ve been written off before and have survived, so it will be interesting to see what happens.
The buyout deal was a hoot, though, wasn’t it?

ParticipantTG: I really shouldn’t say anything about either Temecula or Oceanside shopping/parking. Everyone from Fallbrook complains incessantly, but we don’t do anything about upgrading our stores and resist nearly any attempts to bring any new blood into town.
We are finally getting another grocery store in town (Tesco) and, to listen to about half of the residents, you’d think it was the end of the world. Listening to this bunch, it’s equivalent to the fall of Rome.
Speaking of HELOCs and spending: It would be interesting to conduct an informal poll on spending at Costco in Temecula. I’m curious as to what, if anything, has changed.

Participantbsrsharma: Accounting for Chrysler or Lucent is going to be different than for Beazer, largely due to the fact that in both cases, they have significant physical assets (auto production plants for Chrysler, telephone networks for Lucent). Chrysler’s net negative is mainly composed of unfunded pension liabilities and legacy costs.
I think this upcoming year will be particularly telling for the big homebuilders, especially after seeing their stocks savaged this year. Homebuilders don’t enjoy very good market capitalizations and those capitalizations are in large part based on a pretty bare bones Graham’s valuation (land + houses + Cash + A/R). Beazer’s rate of burn would be a major concern, especially if they continue to have problems moving houses.

ParticipantThe worst part about Couric is that she isn’t very intelligent or particulary well read. She adopts this very patronizing style that I find really abrasive, especially given the fact that she is an intellectual lightweight.
When she pronounced the science “settled” on global warming, well, that did it for me.
I have read Bennett’s articles on VoSD. They’re good.
Maybe it’s just me, but I sure would like to see a return to good, solid print journalism. Good research, thoughtfully presented and without bias. Here is the news, and free of prejudice or slant or angle.
I’m probably showing my age, huh?

ParticipantTG: I do have TiVo. The problem is, I use it to record HBO and Showtime movies and all of the “Law and Order” shows I can handle.
I do not watch the news (right wing or left wing), and cannot stomache regular television programming.
Not to sound overly harsh towards either Couric or O’Donnell, but if I were to wake up tomorrow and find that both had been struck by the same fortuitous lightning bolt, I would shrug and get back to my Yoplait and the WSJ.
I like the radiometer idea, though. That has definite merit.
And would you mind thinning out some of the population of Temecula while you are at it? I need to go to Costco and those flipping crowds are killing me!
