ParticipantRus: So she believes that the US adheres to the “Realpolitik” school of thought? I don’t fully disagree, however, I don’t fully agree, either. Lest that sound completely evasive, I would point out that there have been instances where the US has intervened solely for humanitarian reasons and instances where it was driven by national or economic reasons (or both).
I personally admire Otto Von Bismarck’s “Weltpolitik” school of policy (with props to von Bulow and Kaiser Wilhelm II). I also like his adage: “Those wishing to retain respect for either laws or sausages should refrain from watching either being made”. No one like a Prussian to deliver such pithy, trenchant observations, no?
Deutschland uber alles. Don’t forget: As misguided as we occasionally are, there are worse alternatives, and, with all due deference to Mrs. Rustico, it is often a choice between bad and worse. The Soviets were an evil empire and they did seek global domination. We stopped them cold, just as we did Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. Warts and all, America remains, on balance, a force for good.
Stay away from that Turkish hashish. It really messes with those Pink Floyd lyrics.

ParticipantRus: I am against troop withdrawal until we can arrange an orderly transfer of power. I would use Southeast Asia post-1975 as an example of why a precipitate withdrawal is no bueno.
Also, I am presuming that we wouldn’t need the oil at some point in the future (like 10 – 20+ years down the road), so it is a little like comparing apples to oranges to discuss a short- to mid-term strategy like withdrawing from Iraq versus a long-term strategy like an eventual complete US withdrawal from the region.
Just out of curiosity, what are your wife’s beliefs, geo-politically speaking?
Who advised that you begin drinking and/or smoking ganja? Not that it’s bad advice, just interested where it came from. Preacher? Spouse? Children? Local law enforcement?

ParticipantRus: I never claimed Iraq was about the oil. I felt that Iraq was about WMD and the threat that Saddam posed to the region. When I talk about the region as a whole, I include oil, but mainly because of the other countries there such as Saudi, Kuwait, UAE, etc.
As far as Islam goes: I do feel that Islam is a huge threat. I don’t necessarily believe that we need to occupy the area in order to deal with the threat. I do believe that your points are valid, however, I don’t think that our physical presence there is a necessity.
EDIT: Rus, I don’t drink. I probably should, though. And, within my own house, I am always right. Well, mostly.

Participantgandalf: I have a picture of Reagan and Maggie Thatcher holding hands whilst dividing up the world between them.
It’s suitable for framing. Would probably go well with your den decor.
Let me know.
