ParticipantAecetia: Geez, what did I ever do to you? “You really act like a boomer”?!? Argh! It was the Volvo comment, wasn’t it? I knew it!
Yup, this has been a fun thread and there are some really sharp folks out there participating.
I think Reagan recognized the threat of the Religious Right even more than Goldwater because it had begun infiltrating the Republican Party during the late 1970s and early 1980s. By the time Dubya was in power, the Religious Right and the Republican Party had become indistinguishable from one another. I had hopes that McCain would follow through on his “crusade” to break their hold, but after he showed up at Libery University and starting kissing butt, well, that hope faded fast.
Act like a boomer. Sheesh.

Participantgandalf: Dude. Pulling yer twine there. I am about to expose myself to all sorts of friggin’ ridicule, but I will go on record and say that I really like the Volvo XC90. There, I said it.
In the immortal words of George W. Bush: “Bring it on!”.
I was born in 1965, and apparently if you were born in that year, you are neither Boomer nor Gen-X. Weird, huh? Not fish, not fowl. In truth, its those little Gen-Y mofos I really don’t trust. Too many piercings and far too adept with technology. They make Luddites like me very nervous.

ParticipantJohn: I had a CO in the Army who was a bible thumping hardshell Baptist. This guy loved God, and America, and killing people. I never understood how he could reconcile his faith with the killing (I couldn’t and still can’t).
I consider myself a Goldwater conservative and stray perilously close to libertarianism at times. I do lament the fact that Repubs have been hijacked by the Religious Right, especially people like Robertson. I find Pat Robertson to be a dishonest, racist, irregilious homophobe. The fact that he presents himself as a man of God is utterly reprehensible and immoral. That he is also considered a pillar of the Republican Party shows how far we’ve fallen. Separation of church and state exists for a reason, and, while I am a Catholic, that has nothing to do with my being an American.
As far as the Dems go: They have been hijacked by the Red Diaper Wing of the 1960s counterculture movement. I go to great lengths to point out that there is a difference between “liberal” and “liberalism” and “left” and “leftism”. The PC movement, the attempts by the Left to crush academic freedom and free expression, and identity politics; all are products of this movement to bring America into a bright new Socialist future. That probably sounds a little alarmist, but you can see it manifestly in the media, the schools and universities, and the body politic at large.
I do agree wholeheartedly with gandalf that things need to change and change substantially for this country to move forward and do so from the center (or, better yet, center-right). That’s why I said the Republicans need an enema.
I’d support the Dems, but they’re all like gandalf: Birkenstock wearing, Volvo driving, “Mother Jones” reading, tofu eating, free-thinking East Coasters. Not that I ever stoop to stereotypes or anything. π

Participantarraya: You would seem to be the guy to ask a couple of questions on the subject of energy. You say we are sitting on the world’s largest reserve of oil. So, this is larger than, say, the fields in Saudi? Or, are am I thinking of something completely different (in terms of drilling, production, etc).
Also, I read somewhere that the world’s largest natural gas field was found in Utah. It is said to be larger than those found in Iran and Russia combined. Is natural gas therefore a viable alternative energy solution?
Lastly, where do you fall on nuke power? I’m a big fan of the French model, especially in light of their ability to provide some 80% of their energy through nuclear power, and with an enviable safety reocord to boot.
