ParticipantRus: I wouldn’t categorize it as spurious, but that is probably splitting hairs. His commentary included castigating “atrocities”, both within his unit and with other military units throughout Vietnam. It was part of a well-thought out statement about the Vietnam War at large, so I wouldn’t say his comments were spur of the moment or off the cuff.
CNN had an interview with a former member of Kerry’s unit (he actually took command following Kerry’s exit) and he was of the same mind regarding the comments: http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/04/20/kerry.military/index.html
Rus, I don’t disagree with you regarding war and militarism in general. I have lost quite a few of my friends, and have other friends in Iraq and Afghanistan right now. That being said, offering a sweeping indictment of militarism doesn’t offer much in the way of solutions in terms of confronting the challenges of Iran or North Korea or China or Russia. I am not advocating a military solution to any or all of these, but would ask how do you handle a bellicose regime like Iran’s that is simply not interested in diplomacy or negotiations?

Don’t refer to me as an idiot again, please.
I lost my cousin at Hue during Tet ’68, and am a former Army Ranger myself (5 years service).
My dad was a former Marine who served in WWII (Guam and Okinawa campaigns) and Korea (Inchon, Seoul and Chosin Reservoir) and my uncle was a Marine fighter pilot in WWII and Korea.
I don’t need to prove my chops to you or anyone else, but I am showing my service and my family’s to underscore the point that not only do I have the highest level of respect for veterans, I am one myself.
Read the link and the story behind Kerry’s testimony following his “service” in Vietnam and then tell me who sickens you more. I know my answer.

ParticipantFLU: Dude, you are so right about the white guys and Asian women. I grew up in the Bay Area and had a major affinity for Asian girls.
I’m not sure if there was some sort of plot behind it, though, I just really liked Asian girls.
Also, hot brunette cheerleaders like Varsity athletes, not JV guys. You knew that, right?

ParticipantOC: Careful about taking Obama to task. Around here, that can be treated like heresy.
This country has collectively decided to stop thinking. That is apparent when any discussion across the ideological divide turns into a nasty shouting match.
That we are worried about gay marriage when the economy is in the tank, our education system is failing and our ability to compete on the world stage is faltering is absolutely unbelievable to me.
But Obama is gonna fix it. Yup. Probably the same way that McCain would fix it. Or Kerry.
BTW, I think pretty much all guys mellow out with a little head, right?
