ParticipantJordanT: The Economist wrote an excellent article on Iran and the widespread disenchantment of the populace. They also pointed out that the hardliner government utilizes everything from voter intimidation to censorship (of opposition papers, media and other organs) to outright threats to keep the populace in line.
Iran is made up of well educated, literate and largely pro-American people. Iran is governed by militantly Islamic hardliners, who are fanatically opposed to the West, Israel and America. I would like to discount the utterances of President I-Am-A-Dinnerjacket, but history has shown the folly of ignoring those people that are either in a position to carry out their threats, or rapidly moving towards it.

ParticipantCONCHO: One word for you: Halabja. Saddam’s WMD program was not only of concern to the US, but the French, British and Russians as well.
Saddam used chem weapons against the Kurds at Halabja, and had used them against the Iranians in the Iran-Iraq War.
Iran’s intents, like Hitler’s, have been clearly and explicitly stated. The hardliner government has made it abundantly clear that they are willing to accept massive casualties in exchange for the destruction of Israel and the US (“The Great Satan”).

Participantgandalf: I think the next four years is pretty much a suicide mission for either McCain or Obama. The hole is so deep at this point (similar to when Carter came to power) that I don’t see either of them being able (at least in a four year term) to make significant headway. You need at least two terms to make a difference and, given the way things are, neither would be afforded the opportunity.
The country (and the opposition party) would hold them up as a scapegoat and they’d be done after the first term.
I think we should hire Vladimir Putin to run things for a while. That mofo looks like he gets s**t done. Of course, we’d all wind up wearing little fur hats with red stars on them, but it’s a small price to pay.
