ParticipantDan,
“Porn for a liberal”. Not in any way sure how to address that one, so I won’t.
Apparently, my not being down with the whole “agree with me totally or risk complete vilification” thingie didn’t sit well with Casca.
I’ll look up Hammes. I’ve got a buddy of mine who is an ex-SEAL and he probably knows dude.
That’ll teach you to go away for a few days, huh? And thanks ever so much for the comparison to Sean Hannity and Fox News. You’re a real gem, there, sport.
So? Jump on in. The water’s fine.

ParticipantShadowfax: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. A nasty by-product of the “been there, done that” School of Hard Knocks.

ParticipantShadowfax: That was what drove my referencing my own experiences with torture and interrogation. Anyone who has been in combat knows firsthand that all the John Wayne movies were bulls**t. There is no glory to it, only death.
Same goes for torture: It demeans everyone involved in the process and generally the information gained is of negligible value. Casca was trying to imply that he had some experience that would have a direct bearing on the conversation, however, he never divulged what this was. I get the sense that this is a well-read individual, but until he actually gives some insight into his background and experiences, there is little beyond this.
His casual dismissal of PTSD indicates that he wasn’t a soldier, and lacks the real world understanding that having that background brings. His reference to my military background being “thin” when I spent three straight years doing counterinsurgency work also shows a lack of depth.
Lastly, his conflation of Nazi torture methods with those being used at present to “protect our freedoms” does tie in to your “ends justifying the means” observation.

ParticipantRus: Was it the proximity to Camp Pendleton and the Marines that decided it for you? The joke about Fallbrook is it has the “Three M’s”: Marines, Mexicans and millionaires. Of course, being none of the three sort of makes me the odd man out.
Back when I had a motorcycle, I would cruise Campo Road to the border and then into Tecate to the biergarten there. I liked Jamul, especially the off-the-beaten-path feel to it.
Fallbrook used to be that way, too.
