ParticipantYes scaredy, I think the new hires will get a different retirement, some kind of tiered system and probably have to pay more into their retirement. That being said, the prison guard unions are very strong. Unless we send 1/3 of the prisoners to a cheaper State or farm them out to another country and/ or some new kind of genetic manipulation cures all the addicts, we will have to deal with the outrageous costs of incarceration. Because of recent crimes, you can expect judges to be tough on crime and for certain sentences to get longer. Let’s hope Brian is correct about the economic boom. I think econprof’s investments in Arizona will also be a good long term investment. He can live here when Arizona is too hot and there when San Diego is too cold. The best of both worlds.

ParticipantRuss,
No we have not, but I am going to check them out and it might be a good thing to have in the garage. We did recently convert some to the next generation beyond the curlycues and they look pretty good in the kitchen, where there are 4 flourescents and 6 regular lights. We also have a lamp, which we use at night instead of hitting the switch and lighting them all up. We are converting the bathrooms over to energy savers. It all helps. We had a big wood pile and the insurance company dropped us until we moved/ used it all up. It is hard to win in a rigged game, but I cannot see giving in to the gougers. It is too bad the deregulation was such a mess. SDG&E has been the only game in town for way too long.

ParticipantThank you all very much. It cooks in El Cajon from mid June or July through most of October, then hot to warm days and cool nights. I am sick of the high energy bills and all of us use a computer and we have a large television that we use instead of going to the movies (except for Avatar!). We rent netflix and enjoy a smaller version of a home theater. We got rid of all lawn and are using a mix of natives and Mediterranean types for the most part and have tried to not be energy pigs.
With all those adjustments the water and electric keep going higher, so now solar. I hope it works, otherwise, we might look for a cheaper place to live, but I do not want to be near Yellowstone, Mammoth, etc. I think it is just a matter of time before one of them blows!
