could an economy exist not based on consumption of energy and materials at the current rate and endless consumerism? Massage-based?

Plus not having to pay for mortgage or keeping a renter’s rent while letting the banks take the house = having a lot of money to spending on more important things during the holiday season, like toys, gifts, and useless crap from stores like walmart π
Meanwhile, my neighbor that is two years behind in property tax payments just picked up a 52″ Samsung LCD tv after purchasing a 42″ one same time last year…
Yup, good times are here again.
Btw: I’m spending more this year then last. Might as well, I deserve it more than some of my bailout colleagues…

November 29, 2009 at 2:05 AM #487808moneymakerParticipantMy Honey and I have done the Black Friday thing for the last 3 or 4 years and I have to say I think the lines were shorter this year. I did notice that stores like JC Penney’s, Home Depot, and Costco seemed to have hired extra help this year, which was nice. My overall observation is that numbers will be down,we spent less than normal, like everyone else we just have everything we need and can’t justify buying more. We almost didn’t go this year but I’m glad we did. Here’s an interesting link on California employment http://www.sacbee.com/1232/rich_media/1698037.html
