eavesdropper, I have that exact same light in my circa 1993 kitchen today, lol!
BG, I knew you were a woman of taste and refinement!
I had one of those in my last house also. Contractor choice in my husband’s house (built in 1997), and he could never understand why I hated the thing (I think that guys just have a love thing going with fluorescent lights, period.) Ours was about 60 inches long, and it always reminded me of a lid to a casket. Naturally, I lived with it for years, and didn’t get around to replacing it until we put our house on the market in early ’08.
Lol, UCGal, my mom chose the “farm scene” wallpaper and I had to do the papering. Had to make sure each corner of her “farm-sized” 11’x22′ kitchen was properly plumb-bobbed, or the cows’ udders, chicken heads and rooster craws would run north, straight up the wall! I did the bottom half of her kitchen wall in coordinating stripes to match her 7 pc. vinyl dinette set!
BG, you have only yourself to blame for that day of hell! Haven’t you ever heard of “proper prior preparation”?
Whenever I agreed to do a wallpapering job for my mother, I made sure that I made a big plate of double chocolate hash brownies the night before. That way I didn’t have to worry about any of that plumb-line b.s. Halfway into the second brownie, Mom would channel Salvador Dali, and the wallpapering was done in a flash. I’d always see her looking at it, with a puzzled expression, but somewhere in the deep recesses of her brain, she knew that she shared responsibility for the mismatched cows’ udders, perpendicular stripes, etc., etc.

BG, come to DC, and I’ll take you to some Virginia wineries. Wine may not be as good as CA, but after one or two barrels, you won’t notice. And you’ll have the added exciting bonus of possibly running into Michele Salahi, the infamous White House party crasher and newly-tapped Real Housewife of DC.
Well eavesdropper, you just caught me sitting on a piece of giant driftwood (in my mind) at Muir Beach (near the subject home here) and studying my fav book . . . lol.
SURE, I’d love to tour some wineries in VA with you! I’ll be back in your area in June 2011 and will PM you when I make arrangements, (probably in Feb. 2011). And running into “Michele and Co.” is just a bonus. Can she get us a tour to the “White House” . . . lol? Just tell me what to wear! And thanks for the offer!

Lol, eavesdropper, my mom’s house was located in Denver, CO and I did not learn of the “hash brownie recipe” you describe here until I visted my “recently relocated” friends in Humboldt County, CA, a few years later. Alas, it was too late, the wallpaper had already been hung and my mom was the beneficiary of scientifically-placed cow’s udders and pig’s snouts. It is what it is. Subject house has long been sold (due to mom’s untimely death >15 yrs ago) and I am in hopes that its owners (still the same ones) have elected to repaper or retexture the kitchen walls to their liking.

September 24, 2010 at 10:14 PM #609149bearishgurlParticipant
I used to live in NorCal when I was a kid, had several friends who lived just down the street from that house. Believe me, the view to the north and east is absolutely amazing on a spring morning. Part of me would love to buy that place … it’s only about 80% out of my price range π But now I’m too settled in So Cal to move back.
From the pictures it seems beautiful, and impeccably maintained. But it’s probably all but uninsulated, heats up like a ****** in summer, and costs a small fortune to heat in winter … and yeah, builders cut corners even in 1971, so who knows what you’d find?
I’ll enjoy my O’Side tract house and reminisce of all those beautiful summer evenings spent choking on exhaust fumes on the 101 π
AK, I am seriously considering retiring in Norcal. I don’t think the popular “San Rafael” listing you posted here is subject to fumes from “the 101”.
The air in NoCal is not only colder than SD County for the majority of the year, it is basically clean in that it blows off the ocean in this particular area. IMO, additional “R-30” insulation doesn’t cost jack sh!t in comparison to the “lifestyle” this particular locale offers in comparison to SD Co.
If what you say is true, let it roll and bring on the isulation installers. I’ll be there to “supervise” . . . lol!
