And y’all don’t know what you’re talking about: this kitchen qualifies as updated. If I know my fluorescent lighting, that’s an early 90s ceiling fixture you’re seeing there. FYI there’s nothing better to enhance 60s harvest gold and avocado appliance shades than fluorescent lights.
LOL – my house in PA had been updated from it’s original roots (built 1900ish)… to avocado green and harvest gold. And yes – flourescent lights. I did choose to remove the horrible lime green and neon orange “farm scene” wallpaper that had been added circa 1975… but those appliances were kept till they died. The dishwasher was still there when I sold. (Although I’d switched the cover to one of the alternate colors – ivory. You could take apart the door and find changeable front panels: harvest gold, avocado green, cocoa brown, and ivory.)
eavesdropper, I have that exact same light in my circa 1993 kitchen today, lol!
Lol, UCGal, my mom chose the “farm scene” wallpaper and I had to do the papering. Had to make sure each corner of her “farm-sized” 11’x22′ kitchen was properly plumb-bobbed, or the cows’ udders, chicken heads and rooster craws would run north, straight up the wall! I did the bottom half of her kitchen wall in coordinating stripes to match her 7 pc. vinyl dinette set!
You referred to “cocoa brown” and “ivory” panels. The PROPER TERMS were “coppertone” and “almond.” I remember the switchable panels on my mom’s kitchenaid d/w. Get with it, UCGal! Coppertone was the name of the game in 1974.
Flu is correct in that those s/s frigs lasted “forever” but I have replaced three compressors in my lifetime, I think. We finally replaced the avocado green “Coldspot” with a newfangled “almond Frigidaire” circa 1981! It had “leather-look” trim on the doors and was HOT!!
H@ll, I still have a harvest gold 5-spd Osterizer blender (w/all the attachments) and red brick “Crockpot” that run like champs!!

September 24, 2010 at 9:00 PM #609115bearishgurlParticipant

Yep, that’s an awesome house.
Wish we had more houses down here like that to choose from instead of one tacky, two-story, McStucco box after another.
Lord, please, please, please make these big developers/builders die off and allow people to buy their own lots and build their own custom homes again! Amen.
CAR, wish I had your faith, but I fear that if most of the citizenry started to design their own houses, it would be worse than what most of the big developers are doing.
They’d have to start a new magazine: “Architectural InDIGESTion” (yeah, I know…that’s really bad. But it’s late in the day here in the east).
Call me a snob. But trust me on this one. If you want to get an idea of what happens when people have a construction loan, a yen to be a “designer”, and a little time on their hands, click on the link: http://homesoftherich.net/2009/06/inside-teresa-giudices-new-jersey-mansion.html
*Don’t miss the video house tour halfway down the page. See something you just gotta have? Link to the catalog for the October 3 bankruptcy auction:

eavesdropper, your NJ Mcmansion is simply gaudy. It’s like an impersonal “cavern” with a few choice “empty” built-ins. It may as well be showcased on “Jersey Shore,” a favorite party-animal show of the current HS set.
CAR, you MUST review the link below. I think you would really appreciate all the love that went into true, authentic mid-century design. This architect is now deceased, but his voluminous works live on in SoCal.

His first house for his family IS STILL for sale in Pt. Loma:

I realize this home is not located in your area of interest but Sim Bruce Richards was one of the original “taliesins” of Frank Lloyd Wright (apprentices). There are a few more like him throughout the country but it takes a special buyer to appreciate all the work that has gone into the design of these homes!
Here’s another local link to peruse for local mid-century modern architecture. Enjoy!!

I miss Norcal, too! I can almost “feel” the breezes on the deck overlooking Mt. Tamalpais just gazing at those pics! I can totally imagine that nice tall stone fireplace crackling with the patio screen open!AK, are you considering moving?? I try not to look too much at RE in Norcal because I don’t want to “dream” about something I can’t do right now . . . lol :=(
I used to live in NorCal when I was a kid, had several friends who lived just down the street from that house. Believe me, the view to the north and east is absolutely amazing on a spring morning. Part of me would love to buy that place … it’s only about 80% out of my price range π But now I’m too settled in So Cal to move back.
From the pictures it seems beautiful, and impeccably maintained. But it’s probably all but uninsulated, heats up like a ****** in summer, and costs a small fortune to heat in winter … and yeah, builders cut corners even in 1971, so who knows what you’d find?
I’ll enjoy my O’Side tract house and reminisce of all those beautiful summer evenings spent choking on exhaust fumes on the 101 π

September 24, 2010 at 9:30 PM #609135eavesdropperParticipant
eavesdropper, I have that exact same light in my circa 1993 kitchen today, lol!
BG, I knew you were a woman of taste and refinement!
I had one of those in my last house also. Contractor choice in my husband’s house (built in 1997), and he could never understand why I hated the thing (I think that guys just have a love thing going with fluorescent lights, period.) Ours was about 60 inches long, and it always reminded me of a lid to a casket. Naturally, I lived with it for years, and didn’t get around to replacing it until we put our house on the market in early ’08.
Lol, UCGal, my mom chose the “farm scene” wallpaper and I had to do the papering. BG, you have only yourself to blame for that day of hell! Haven’t you ever heard of “proper prior preparation”?
Whenever I agreed to do a wallpapering job for my mother, I made sure that I made a big plate of double chocolate hash brownies the night before. That way I didn’t have to worry about any of that plumb-line b.s. Halfway into the second brownie, Mom would channel Salvador Dali, and the wallpapering was done in a flash. I’d always see her looking at it, with a puzzled expression, but somewhere in the deep recesses of her brain, she knew that she shared responsibility for the mismatched cows’ udders, perpendicular stripes, etc., etc.
