Woodshop to sand my door

Does anyone know of a shop or just a guy that I can bring my front door to and get it sanded to remove all the paint on one side? I’d like the paint removal to be a 1 day job and if I DIY I doubt that’s possible.

just pay a handyman to repaint your door. If you’re not willing to strip it yourself, you’re not really going to save much money DIY painting it. There’s an old saying that painting anything (particularly automotive painting) is about 4x effort to prep, and 1x effort to paint. The better you prep, the better the outcome is.  The stripping/sanding/filling etc is the hard part. Putting paint on the surface is the easy part.

Plus, are you really going to spend time taking the front door off, put it into a car, transport it somewhere for them to strip it, bring it back to your place.. And meanwhile, you just have your house wide open without a front door while someone is working on it (unless you have a steel security screen front door too)…

And if you really want to DIY it, and it’s just latex paint, it’s pretty easy to strip.

Buy a cheap heatgun from harbor freight for like $15 and a metal large scraper, and cook the paint until it wrinkles and just scrape it with a metal scraper… Any residue, follow up with a good paint remover solvent from home depot Klean-Strip Premium Paint Stripper or something like that. Just don’t cook the paint until the wood starts smoking or burning, you might warp the door.

So a couple of things.

1) Yes the prep is most of the work.  That’s why I’m willing to pay someone to do it.

2) I want to get the inside stripped because it’s a paneled door. The panels are going have to be sanded manually, unless there are special tools for that.

3) The idea being if I can get it sanded down in a single day I won’t leave my house open, but during that time yes of course I won’t have a door.

4) I live in a condo. The HOA owns the outside so I can’t do anything really. Plus they are painting the complex so I thought now is the time to do the inside. It’s a solid Mahogany door so returning it to a wood stain finish would be nice!

5) Even assuming I wanted to do the stripping. It’s not a 1 day DIY job. I’d have to have the door off for several days.

6 )Buying more tools is an issue  since my garage is already full.  I have an orbital sander for smaller jobs.

I can paint cars too…Sort of… 20x harder than home doors and gates…getting the paint to match is a royal PITA, so I cheat and paint an entire section where there are visual cut lines so it’s harder to tell if the color is slightly off, and only do it on old cars I care less about.

Are you looking to repaint it or stain it?  If u r just going to repaint it there is no need to fully strip it. Just have to remove any paint that is not well adhered. Might be able to pressure wash it and paint it with a primer/paint in one. But i would definitely take it off the frame to do it.

Oh. I see u want to get it down to bare wood. That’s some work. Are they shaker style or are the panels more intricate and detailed? I’d find a handyman. Conna cost u $35/hr for a day or two. And it’ll take more than sanding. You’ll need chem stripper, assuming that wont harm the wood. I know a high end wood guy that might be able to recommend someone. And another guy who has lots of unlicensed minions.

I started with the citrus strip for one small section and yeah it’s going to be a beast, which is why a shop would be best. Not because it would be cheap but because they have the tools to do it faster-er-ish.  I’ll post a picture of my failure soon.
