I think I tried the wrong item on the menu the one and only time I went to PF Changs… To me it tasted like a frozen TV dinner, complete with peas and carrots cut into perfect little cubes suspiciously similar to the ones that come in frozen packages or school cafeteria lunches. I complained to the manager. It was the one at UTC.
I shop pretty regularly at Lucky Seafood, close to Seafood City. Did you know someone recently bought a winning lottery ticket there? Woo-hoo for them.
My favorite Thai place in SD is Takhrai Thai at Poway Rd. and Pomerado. I judge Thai food by their Panang curry and IMO theirs is the best. There’s also a great Thai place on Coronado, off 10th I think but I don’t remember the name.

May 19, 2008 at 8:44 PM #207918patientlywaitingParticipantAs someone who loves food myself, I e-mailed my Chinese friend (who is a gourmet) about Dintaifung.
Here’s what he said:
This restaurant was raved about in a New York paper, and then it appeared in Singapore several years ago, and established 2 more outlets. It is highly over-rated.
It is not cheap, but lots of people line up to get in.I don’t like it because the taste of the dumplings is very porky — I dislike pork, but will bear with it if it’s very mild or camouflaged like sweet meat. For me, fine dining should not have strong pork smell, but that’s what Dintaifung offers. My friend who is a food connoiseur and chef in Singapore did not like it either. There are better places in Singapore, HK, and Taipei.

So the fact that my wife has at least gotten me out of meat-potatoes to try some places is a mini-miracle. There is a little Thai place where we eat regularly down in Solana Beach on the 101 called Bangkok Bay. I am not a connoisseur of Thai food and basically I get the same thing on each visit. I really enjoy it, I get order the stuff 8 of 10 on a hot scale. It’s called Kow Soi Noodles in a spicy curry broth (with beef) a northern Thai specialty. Whatever it is I like it, and always order a couple of Singha’s to cool the palette.
PF Changs (only attend on company business) or any Chinese-American restaurant I generally order some version of spicy (General Tso’s) chicken. I’m not much a veggie guy, and I hate wasting money on something I might not like. I can’t imagine this spicy chicken is very authentic, but I am not an expert on these things.
