Also, I suspect Texans are a lot friendlier than So Cal. natives.

The $500 vs $1000-1100 per month difference probably just reflects prevailing rents in SD vs Dallas. You hit the nail on the head — you’re paying for what you can do outside the house and when you can do it. San Diego is nearly perfect year around.[/quote]So we agree that housing in TX is pretty much the same as in CA, but only cheaper in Dallas for the same thing.
If we were to put this into an equation, in order for the 2 locations to be equal, SD’s weather would have to be superior enough to overcome the cheaper/superior housing in Dallas. The weight you apply to weather would depend on how much time you spend outdoors.
If you work a full time job and have to take care of a family, you’re not spending a lot of time outdoors. How much per month is good weather worth to you? Considering that you live in NY, weather can be easily overcome by other factors.

Now walking on the beach at least once a week means a lot to me.I don’t know what you would do in Dallas besides work.
I would not move but that is just me.
That is another great thing about SD,
The temperature is almost always just perfect for taking long walks on the beach,
May 5, 2014 at 2:54 PM #773792FlyerInHiGuestI wouldn’t live in TX either, but I understand the calculus of moving. I know people who moved to Dallas and they like it. California has a glamour image that beacons… but it’s a little imaginary.
I think, overall, it depends how much you’re paying for housing. If you built equity over the years, then you’re fine in San Diego. As house prices go up, you feel like you’re getting richer.
But if you have nothing and are starting out, or retiring without a significant nest egg, then moving to TX is a better deal.
you can water ski on the lakes in TX. Do all the after school activities like people do in CA. Go shopping at the mall, go to the movies, like people do here. Is shopping at Fashion Valley any better than shopping in an indoor air-conditioned mall?
Most people don’t have a lot time for entertainment outside the home anyway. Work during the week with all the kids’ activities take up all the time. On weekends, mow the lawn, wash the cars, clean and maintain the house, laundry, more kids activities, birthday parties, etc.. and that’s it.
May 5, 2014 at 3:04 PM #773793The-ShovelerParticipantHousing cost can be quite high in Dallas as well in the better parts.
RE taxes can be quite high also especially if you got a little land with it.
My colleague was telling me she was paying over 16K a year on her Dallas 300K home (out in the Burbs) traffic was just as bad as L.A. at rush hour.
They need to run the Air conditioner about 6 or more months out of the year.
May 5, 2014 at 6:20 PM #773802joecParticipantAll comments are pretty true. Just depends on what you want to pay for…Most people who want to move to TX don’t already have a place here or have a place next to the beach that they can afford to do those weekly walks/etc…For people who want to have more space/a home, there’s no question that the size/space of house you get for the same 500k in TX is going to be much bigger than San Diego proper…However, you could also live in the outskirts of SD far east, etc for pretty cheap too. Course, you still have to deal with some negatives like state income tax so if you are a high earner, that may sting…I know some consulting and doctors who pull close to a mil a year so moving to TX alone saves over 100k in income tax. Property tax, though higher doesn’t catch up to that difference.
Bottom line is it depends on your situation like most things in life.
For a homebody like me, nice weather/sun/etc/etc is a waste. I’d be just as happy in a cramped studio in front of a computer playing a video game all day…while it rains outside constantly.

This crap can be kept to a minimum if you live in a condo/townhouse where the exterior is maintained for you and hire a maid to come once a week. Car washing? Lol, take it through a car wash once a month…
Takes 5 mins and is a lot better on water than manual washing.

January 6, 2015 at 7:32 PM #781675spdrunParticipantAnother company moving to a sh!tty state that offered a healthy bribe. If I worked for them and had to move to Atlanta to keep my job, I’d be irate. To put it mildly.

January 7, 2015 at 12:35 AM #781676svelteParticipantYeah I read about the Merc NJ->GA move.
My first reaction was it made no sense.
My second reaction was that it must say the US HQ is just a figurehead. Real decisions are made on the other side of the ocean.
January 7, 2015 at 1:29 AM #781677CA renterParticipantThe worst part is that the Atlanta politicians who’ve lured MB with at least $50 million in incentives will claim that they are “creating jobs.”
And we continue to spiral down…
