It’s actually funny to joke about this stuff because none of us have a clue what could happen, nor have we ever experienced anything like it. If hyper-inflation takes control of society without any sort of drastic banking meltdown, I would assume things could essentially unfold slowly. Of course if we did have terrorist attack on the US, it could be devastating. Keep in mind Al-Qaida would love to see us as the next Roman Empire, so I am sure their architects are behind the drawing boards as we speak.
I also thought of some other interesting scenarios of how the system could really meltdown in a short period of time. What happens if the credit card crisis shuts down the ability to use a Visa or MC? I guess somewhat of a far fetched question, but society could not function without the use of credit cards. Many pile debt on debt, so for them, there isn’t money to draw out the banks.
Veritas is right if system fails you need a plan, not with one person, but many. Doesn’t matter how big an arsenal is, there is always a bigger one out there. The bummer for San Diegans is that Mexico really isn’t an option as an escape route. Canada would be much more of a viable option as long as you you had a warm winter coat.
On another note a buddy of mine last night watched CVS in 4S Ranch get robbed in the early evening (good thing he was able to get the license plate of the robbers). Maybe criminals are going to start pursuing the nicer neighborhoods because that is where the money is. Makes sense!

January 26, 2009 at 7:30 AM #336104blahblahblahParticipantThings are already breaking down all over the US and they have been for many years. Seen a picture of Detroit lately? How about New Orleans? Or just drive through any small town in the midwest and look at the carnage. No jobs, dead malls, everyone on meth, lots of folks on government assistance. Many parts of the US/Mexico border region are in open warfare between rival drug cartels and the police. Police chiefs being shot, kidnappings, beheadings, rocket attacks, car bombs, you name it. Ciudad Juarez (across the Rio Grande from El Paso) is more dangerous than Baghdad and Washington DC is more dangerous than Rio de Janeiro. Here in SD we are quite insulated from this because we have a lot of government money flowing in and a lot of tourist money coming in too. All of this talk about impending collapse cracks me up because it has been happening for 30+ years! The reason most people don’t see it is because they don’t visit the places where the poor people live, they just watch network news, etc… If you really want to prepare for the future, use a little of the money you have left and spend some time in Mexico City, in Sao Paulo, in Buenos Aires. That’s what we are all in for. It will be crappy but people are still going to get along. There will be gunfire in the streets but people will still go shopping. There will still be weddings and birthday parties, it’s just that most of them will be a lot less expensive than they are now. People are going to learn to IGNORE the government. Not fight it, not be frustrated with it, not expect it to get anything but worse but simply to IGNORE it. They’ll pay their taxes but expect ZERO in return. We are very lucky here that we still have good roads! Hopefully that will last a few more years…
Stop worrying and go talk to your neighbors. We’re going to need to work together in local communities to address the problems we face. If you want to go be a lone wolf on your property in the boonies you can try it but unless you’ve spent your whole life as a farmer your odds aren’t good at succeeding.

January 26, 2009 at 8:21 AM #336119socratttParticipantConcho, I’ve spent plenty of time in third world countries and I have had guns pointed in my face a number of times. My family is from South Africa and if you really want to experience crime go spend a few weeks in Johannesburg.
I think what you fail to understand is the fundamentals are breaking down in this country and fast. Whether we are talking Biblical times or today, crime and drugs have always been around, that doesn’t necessarily destroy a country. In fact you wouldn’t have a normal society without it.
We could all gather in community groups to help stop what may occur soon in this country, but we don’t have the power anymore. How do stop hyper inflation and the printing of trillions of dollars? How do end a possible trade war with China? These larger issues our citizens have no control over. We use to have a vote on key decisions, now a vote means nothing.
Our society has failed ethically, morally and economically. The biggest issue now is that this a global problem. 20 years ago you could catch a 10 hour flight either way and not have a worry in the world. The US, as the Roman Empire, is center of the Universe. When the nucleus breaks down everything crumbles along with it.
Just a little fact at what happens at a government that cannot sustain itself. Iceland is officially done today!
