True, AN.
My point is that having children is not selfless. That’s all. I’m not questioning the validity of having children. I’m only saying that it’s not selfless.
Like davelj said, we all do things (whatever we do) for selfish reasons.
That argument that having kids is selfless simply doesn’t fly.
In the scheme of things, considering environmental and social and economic factors, not having kids could be either selfish or selfless. But having kids is definitely selfish.
Once again, selflessness and selfishness is not black and white. The act of conceiving a child might be selfish due to personal gratification. However, the subsequent 25+ years of sacrifice to make sure you raised a good person requires many selfless acts. If you never had a child and raised a child before, I wouldn’t expect you to understand. I didn’t know how much is involved in raising a child until I had one of my own. 3rd party looking in have no idea. I had no idea. What scheme are you referring to? Why does this scheme make not having kids be selfless? Yet having kids is selfish?
Agree with this, AN. Nobody understands the work and sacrifices until they are doing it themselves.
I had lots of experience with kids before having my own, yet was still unprepared for what it really meant. Not complaining, BTW, just stating a fact.

March 30, 2010 at 8:44 AM #533174NotCrankyParticipantThese topics alway remind me that if my parents were not extremely selfish, foolish and Catholic, me and about 7 of my brothers and sisters wouldn’t be here.Looking at the enviornmental destruction of these reproduction policies, I guess it can be said that the Pope is a gross polluter. I thought we were dust in the wind… and now I find we are garbage… devestating.

March 30, 2010 at 8:51 AM #533184NotCrankyParticipantOh yes, CaRenter, I agree, vomit is worse than poop. My wife just reminded me that I disappear whenever there is vomit around and that I have never actually dealt with the puke and clean-up of car seats and such. What can I say, it starts my own gag reflexes even to just type this.
