My commute is 80 miles one way (Carmel Valley to OC). Luckily I work from home 2 days a week. I am driving a Prius and getting around 54 MPG.
Estimated miles per year: ~32K
32000/54 = 592.6 gallons (Prius)
32000/28 = 1143 gallons (Accord)592.6 gallons * $3.75/gallon = $2222
1143 gallons * $3.75/gallon = $4286Anyone who is driving from Telecula/Murietta to OC or to SD should think about getting a Prius. One of my coworker drives from Murietta to OC in her Suburban for the last 3 years. I just don’t get it.

April 12, 2008 at 3:57 PM #185685svelteParticipantGeez, jimmyle, that’s fantastic. How are you measuring that? Do you write down miles and gallons in a log book at the gas pump, or are you trusting the digital readout?
The reason I’m asking is that I have co-workers who drive the Temecula/San Diego commute in Priuses and they are getting high 40s – they measure with miles/gallons in a log book. You’re the first person I heard claim over 50.
I’ve seen several article claiming that actual Prius gas mileage doesn’t match the EPA stats of 48 city / 45 highway.

WHY???? Why dont you move north? I mean you rent right? So you could move to like Oside or Cbad or even southern OC and find rents in your range. Certainly within a couple hundred dollars rent, which would be ofset by the extra gas you use. No judgement or hate or anything. I just hate to commute. I drive from Far western MM to LJ, a grand drive of about 5-6 miles and I cant wait till we move so it will be 4 miles and if I hit the lights, about 5 minutes.
Also, not to be a dick but forced drives like that are why oil prices can rise 5x in 6 years and demand falls like .5%. You know it isnt good for your family (long commutes take you away more), your kids (what kind of world are we leaving them too?) and your wallet. I commend you for the prius and such. I am not trying to pass a value judgement or anything. I just dont understand the logic. You dont understand your coworkers logic of driving a SUV everyday, so this is one step more, I dont understand why you DRIVE so far, even if it was 3 days a week.
