State schools used to be tuition-free or nearly so until the 60s and 70s. UC Berkeley used to be $300 per year in the 1960s. Given 8x inflation since then, that’s like $2400 per year now.
Why is public medical insurance any crazier than Medicare, Medicaid, or Social Security? All of which theoretically duplicate private functions.
