Gee I wonder where Motorola’s mobile spinoff business unit is NOT going to be headquartered……
This is all rumor at this point, but last I heard, Motorola will move their head quarter to San Diego. They’ll be taking over the old Nokia’s building off Scripps Poway. Nokia has already moved to RB. We’ll see if this rumor become reality in a few months. They supposed to move in next year.
Well, I’m pretty sure other areas are being considered too…If I were Sanjay, I’d be considering Richardson,Texas, unless San Diego has some nice incentives to throw in.
Plenty of reasons for MOTO to be close to QCOM, but in the end it is up to CEO, whether the choice is whimsical or well reasoned.I’d go to a Cubs game, it starts snowing, I get frostbite and I take the first Gulfstream V back to La Jolla, but that’s just me. And you can’t really find any skilled people in Chicago, except for the well-oiled Daley cr… family.
there’s plenty or reasons NOT to be near qualcomm, with the exception of both him and the other big wigs of the new firm would be from S.D. But mum silence otherwise.

The rumor I heard is they already signed a lease for those Nokia building. They want to be close to QCOM. SD will be where they run the product teams. Sunnyvale is where they’re currently running their feature teams. So, they’re basically concentrating in CA.
If true, that is a rare piece of good news for the San Diego tech industry in a long time. Any idea if this actually means that people move here from elsewhere + new hires ? Or are they just moving folks that they currently have around Sorrento Valley to Scripps Ranch?
My information is limited but this is what I’ve heard/know (we’ll find out by next year since their lease supposed to start beginning of 2011). Majority of the MOT employees in SD belongs to their government and set top box division. Mobile only have about 100-200 (not sure what the current number is after the layoff and people leaving). As I’ve said earlier, their lease for the Nokia building suppose to start in 2011. When they’ll fully move their headquarter to SD is unknown. SD MOT is currently responsible for driving product. There’s no feature development there. Features are being done in Sunnyvale. I heard that at the very least, they’ll move all the HR/accounting/etc. here. I’ve also heard they’ll be moving their R&D here too, or at least making the main R&D location be here. It make sense for product to be driven out of here, since any bugs related to QCOM chipset can be resolved much faster/cheaper here. I’m sure they’ll offer their engineers in Libertyville a chance to relocation here. It’s much cheaper for them to do that than do a layoff there. I’m not sure how many people they’ll hire here. Only time will tell.Motorola own their Sorrento Valley buildings. But they’re leasing the Nokia buildings. My speculation is that the mobile devices will move out of Sorrento Valley into Nokia building and the rest of MOT will stay in Sorrento Valley. Their new mobile devices division (the new MOT) will be headquartered out of the Nokia builds and the spun off MOT will be in Sorrento Valley.

The company is supposedly going to be split in two. So the current MOT in SD isn’t going to be the same as the new MOT.
From my observations, dev will be split among dev in china, dev in bangalore, and a smaller dev somewhere in u.s. Around the clock development anyone? Also, my buddies have informed me that “right sizing” has been ongoing…Ok that’s all folks. I need to talk to bangalore now (seriously)… Good night.
