Yes – I think the bog that is the Common Core will probably be the end of APIs. I agree that small differences in API don’t really matter. And I don’t think the elementary school is terribly important either, assuming it’s OK and your child is a good student. Once they get to high school, though, the school makes a big difference. We are happy where we are and try to ignore the overly competitive classmates. We’re both science-y types and generally stay away from the canned science activities. They are enough to destroy anyone’s enthusiasm, if you ask me. Kind of like an art competition.

Your 1st priority should be to raise your children.

One of who? What in the world are you talking about?
February 24, 2016 at 8:02 AM #794826allParticipantA couple of my kids have been playing soccer at the local club for the past few years. I overheard one of them discussing his math MAPS score with his teammates while juggling the ball during warmup.
A friend of mine coaches soccer at one of the Chula Vista clubs – he says he never heard his players talk about test scores. The Chula Vista club regularly beats the local club . If you want your kids to be great soccer players move to Chula Vista.
But there is really not much difference wrt academic and cultural aspirations of parents and children living in the neighborhoods you are contemplating.[Edit]
For us, the ability to walk home from school is significant, if unplanned benefit of living where we do. Both parents have flexible schedules, but with three kids doing all kinds of activities early afternoon can get crazy.February 25, 2016 at 10:06 PM #794985serendipity4ParticipantThank you all, for your valuable comments!
Ok, few more questions. Is after school daycare easier to get into in 4s/del sur than SR(more limited availability, I hear). That would be important for us, with both working. 4s has schools that are walkable to, a big plus, especially if we have parents visiting who can pick/drop them and kids wont have to go to afterschool when grandparents are visiting.
Is quality of afterschool and kids camps/extracurricular classes better in 4s/del sur. For now, I think we would rule out CV since we will get less sqfft for the same amt.
February 26, 2016 at 5:59 AM #794988EssbeeParticipantIn 4S Ranch, I have not had any problem getting my kids into the school-sponsored afterschool program nor the summer program at Stone Ranch. I haven’t heard of major problems at any of the other schools, either. For the Poway Unified School District, the after school and summer program is called “ESS” — “Extended School Services.” I enroll my daughter in ESS and then pay for a few additional “enrichment” classes offered through FitKids America or KidzTyme. These classes are onsite and the majority of kids taking them are ESS students, although some other students take them as well. My daughter has taken classes ranching from Reading Enrichment to Chess to Soccer to Hip Hop Dance. If they are not taking these enrichment classes, ESS has various activities for them as well.
Another popular afterschool option among our acquaintances is “All Star Academy” on Thornmint Road. They seem to have a more academic focus and have options like Chinese language, Spanish, etc. They transport kids via a van from several local schools.
On the north side, there has sometimes been overcrowding for school enrollment at Monterey Ridge. I think there are some old threads here on that issue. I didn’t hear of any one who didn’t get in last year, so it may be improving.
Design 39 (D39) may also have more applicants than spaces. You have a much higher chance of getting in if you live in Del Sur vs if you live in 4S Ranch, as the slots are allotted based on Mello Roos. I have heard that some parents like the freedom/open concept of this school and some do not, so this may or may not matter to you.
February 26, 2016 at 11:17 AM #795007FeistyNumerateParticipant4S has a large boys and girls club and the YMCA. This would be in addition to any of the other school programs in addition to the smaller private options as well. Plus those two have summer programs. YMCA can be on the more expensive side depending on which camp you chose. Each week can be something different, giving you the flexibility to mix it up and cater to the specific desires of the kiddo and your wallet.
In SR you have quite a few options as well. You have SAY at the schools (identical to ESS in Poway) In addition to Jing, KinderCare, Scripps Ranch Swim & Racquet Club, Sol City, & Maggie’s Art.
My son attends Jing and they too have additional enrichment options, Chess, Lego Club, Mad Science etc which is rotated throughout the year. I liked the idea of him learning Mandarin, since most schools do not expose children to a second language until middle school. Having lived abroad in Africa and Poland when he was 3-6 he was already exposed to the foreign languages, so I figured we’d continue to build on that.
My only concern if you were to elect for 4S/Del Sur is your commute. Give a cruise up the 15 one afternoon after you get off work, actually, do it a few times. It’s pretty painful. That combined with most after school programs end at 6pm, if you’re in a demanding career with long hours, you can find yourself smacking against that cut off. Plus I cannot stress enough, evenings FLY by with school age kids. If I get stuck grabbing him minutes before 6, by the time we get home decompress, walk the dogs, get dinner on the table and then finish homework, it’s bedtime. That’s not including throwing them in shower and reading to them and actually enjoying your kid time! Add in sports, any of the girlscout/boy scouts, music lessons… every.minute.counts!
Have you considered University City? Off of Governor Drive? I feel that area is a hidden gem. Would keep you guys close to SV for work however that split may make it painful.
What do you guys do for fun as a family? Are you going to be content with the local activities in 4S? Or do you find yourself maximizing the city and it’s attractions? Beaches? During the week, I’m a robot and we just get through the grind. Weekends we hit the town. I love being 20 minutes from just about anything we like to do. Museums, Balboa Park, Beaches, Restaurants, D&B… You’re kind of tucked away in 4S. Which isn’t bad if it fits your lifestyle!
February 26, 2016 at 1:09 PM #795018serendipity4ParticipantYes, commute and overall hotter in 4s/DS is my main concern. Looks like for elementary school it wont matter much which area, SR or 4s..good!
Are summer camps available in SR too? Any good recommended ones?

Both Dingeman & EBS have after school program & summer camp provided by SAY:
My children attend the SAY summer camp every summer.
February 26, 2016 at 2:01 PM #795022CliffordParticipantWe have children who are in elementary school. When we were house hunting, we considered 4S & SR. We picked SR for the following reasons:
– The elementary schools in 4S seem much more crowded. That’s because the houses in 4S are newer & have younger residents.
The houses in SR near Dingeman & EBS are built from 1995-2001. Most of the folks who live near Dingeman & EBS have children who have already moved on to Marshall Middle or SRHS.– To me, 4S feel more like a “rat race”. In the morning, it seem like everybody use Camino Del Norte to get on to the 15S. In the afternoon, you are stuck in traffic on the 15N from 56 to Camino Del Norte.
As for your concern regarding children from Mira Mesa who attend SR schools via the Choice program: the parents who drive their children to SR everyday from MM tend to be the more devoted parents.
I would not be surprised if average test scores of the Choice students from MM are higher than the average test scores of the SR residents.

I know of the best after school program, and it has the highest rating by far.
It’s called a parent @ home when their kids get home from school. A parent @ home period. A novel idea I know…
Forget the houses, careers, status, the neighborhoods, the schools, cars etc…those things are not important.
February 26, 2016 at 9:51 PM #795034rb_engineerParticipantThis is a very condescending comment. Doesn’t contribute to the conversation.
February 27, 2016 at 12:15 PM #795046MyriadParticipantYeah seriously, the dual working couple is pretty much standard for most middle-class. Didn’t know you have a time machine to take us back to the 1950s.
