Selecting a Roommate/Housemate

So after saying that I would never want a roommate, and after seeing other people go through the process, I got a roommate at my second home in Philly.

I posted the ad on Craigslist and I got some iffy people — a waitress moving out of her parents’, a student on financial aid who said that would pay for her rent, a lawyer with a dog who just got divorced, some other woman with two cats.

I finally settled on a young 25yo Chinese-American doctor who will be doing her surgery fellowship in town. She came with her mom to view the house, and they loved it. She’s a lipstick lesbian who’s definitely a product of tiger parents. Very high achieving, so I expect to have a reliable, clean roommate for several years.

She’s a doctor and not a med student so rent will not be a problem for her. She will become a top surgeon for sure.

Since I’m infrequently in Philly, it will work very well for both of us, I believe.

Time will tell….

PS: There was another Chinese-American doctor on residency who came with her mom. Another product of tiger parents. She decided on another place that’s closer to her hospital. Tiger parents seem to care about the welfare of their kids.

Now that you mention it, I myself had my parents visit my place of rent before deciding. Wanted to make sure it was a safe area!

While we’re on this topic, has anyone used an identity/credit report service such as this http://www.e-renter.com/ to help screen your tenant? Was just wondering how useful this information would be and if it was worth the $30+$2 cost.
