The telling signal WAS Starbucks but the signal occurred when they announced the closing of 300 stores (late 2008 or early 2009)
Then, Toyota sales declined dramatically in the US
If those two signals aren’t enough for you then you aren’t paying attention and don’t understand what drives the US economy (it’s the consumer, stupid!)

I must have sent 100 plus resumes out thus far with ZERO luck other than lunch with a recruiter who SURPRISE! no real jobs. Oh hell at least the free lunch was nice. I have another free lunch next week with another recruiter who probably also has NO real jobs for me. Maybe I should move to India?

May 3, 2009 at 8:25 AM #3925544plexownerParticipantHey mixxalot, at least you are getting call backs and lunches
Just to get a feel for the market I recently sent out 4 resumes to job shops (I’m a software engineer and prefer to work on a contract basis)
In the past, all 4 of these resumes would have gotten call backs and most of the job shops would have asked me to come in and fill out some forms – not that they had jobs for me but they were maintaining a database of resumes for future jobs – back in the mid- to late-90’s there were enough jobs available that I didn’t even bother filling out the job shops’ forms – if they weren’t talking about a specific job when they called me back on my resume I politely declined to come in
As of tomorrow it will have been 3 full weeks since I sent out my resumes and, so far, I have received one standardized e-mail response and no phone calls
I’m not actively looking for a job but this little exercise doesn’t encourage me about the current state of San Diego’s economy
Keep plugging, mixxalot, and good luck
