ben franklin was an early proponent of the “time is money’ school of thought. hard to believe, but people didn’t always feel that way. strong puritan streak in america equating wealth with evdience of god’s favor. would make sense that old ben would give advice calculated to maximize wealth and social standing. or, as one might aptly say in conversation today, “it’s all about the benjamins”.

I don’t disapprove. I’m just noting the inherent humor in providing the counsel that one should, “Marry immediately… but have a mature mistress.”
Franklin may have done that, but that’s not what his letter says. He actually says “Marry immediately … but if you won’t, a mature mistress is better than a younger one.”
Good point. That was sloppy of me to miss that distinction.

A misogynist is “one who hates women” (courtesy of Dictionary.com).
Please don’t cherry pick definitions to suit your argument, lest folks start grumbling about hoists and petards. From your source:
—————
mi⋅sog⋅y⋅ny [mi-soj-uh-nee, mahy-]-noun
hatred, dislike, or mistrust of women
—————Your mistrust and deep seated dislike of women is manifest in your entire approach to the subject at hand.
I’m not moralizing, just pointing out the obvious. There’s nothing wrong with consensual relations between people who treat each other as pleasure appliance.
mi·sog·y·nist (mĭ-sŏj’ə-nĭst)
n. One who hates women.
adj. Of or characterized by a hatred of women.I’m missing your cherry picking point, but…
… by all means, let’s use your definition of misogyny (I’m o.k. with that)… I’ll ask you to show me exactly where I’ve shown a “mistrust and deep seated dislike of women.” I realize that YOU might INTERPRET some of my posts that way, but that doesn’t mean you’re correct in your interpretation. In fact, I could argue the opposite – that in fact I trust women completely – to do what’s in their best interests, just as I trust most folks – men and women – to do the same.
So, kindly… give me some examples of this “dislike and mistrust” – quotes will do just fine.

I rather like women. Some I’ve even loved. What exactly – and please be precise (that is, use quotes) – have I written anywhere in the pages of Piggington that suggests that I hate women. This should be interesting…
Sometimes you’re not the smartest guy in the room. Save the condescension for “hot” chicks without much else to recommend them–maybe they’ll be impressed with your “confidence”.

Again, quotes will do. Otherwise, I’ll have to assume that this is just sophistry on your part and you are incapable of supporting your argument with facts.
December 22, 2009 at 3:54 PM #496679daveljParticipant

I do not think it means what you think it means.
—Inigo MontoyaIf you want a quote, please direct us to the post you wrote about women as something other than objects of amusement, utility, or conquest. Unsupported assertions about how you “like”, nay “love”, women don’t count, and we’re not talking about friends or family.
I don’t need to provide anything: your record speaks for itself. It would be more fun to debate if I had any confidence that you’d do more than simplemindedly parse out of recognition everything you didn’t misread.
