I’m just doing a reality check on pricing on BMW for some folks in the market…
I’m seeing interesting pricing on 5 series (new, 2011 redesigned) around $200-300 above invoice, while San Diego dealers aren’t budging beyond $1000 below MSRP (there’s about a $4-5k spread between invoice and msrp, depending on options).
I’m counting there’s about 10 dealerships in L.A. but on 3 in San Diego. S.D. dealers says there’s no reason for them to sell at these ridiculous prices that L.A. is offering because they are able to close deals within 2-3 weeks and most of their cars are ordered and spoken for.
Any ideas why?
I’m thinking
1) Too much competition in L.A.
2) L.A. economy is in much worse shape than S.D.
I’ve always had better luck buying cars in LA and Orange counties. SD dealers are seldom competitive on pricing. However, SD dealers are very competitive on warranty work. They don’t care where you bought the car. They will gladly jump thru hoops to get your warranty business.

driving around town we see quite a number of LA dealer plate holders all over. so much so that I bet SD dealers are losing at least 50% of their businesses to up north.
