Shannon,
You might want to read this. I think that in many ways you have the Republican Party confused with the Democrats.

John, I have a great deal of respect many Republicans, Goldwater being one of them, as well as Colin Powell, Bob Dole…etc.
I don’t know exactly what you are trying to prove in the article, except that what turned Democratic Southern states red was the Democrats eventual support of civil rights. The mistrust that Southerners harbored against the civil rights movement and activist Democrats is still felt to this day and especially every four years.
Its the “Conservatives” of today that have given me a bad taste; Tom Delay, Rick Santorum, Pat Robertson…etc.
Good article, but what was the point or the argument you were proving?
I wanted you to learn a little about the Repubican Party since you suggested I was a member. The Repubican Party started in a noble fashion and continued as a noble party until it got taken over by the religous nuts about 10 years ago.
Goldwater warned against the religous right and said that if they ever take over the Republican Party then you can kiss politics goodbye.
Shannon, the whole problem is the Government itself. We really really need to get rid of as much of it as we can or else its going to be our downfall.

It is out of our hands and I am fervently hoping and praying for what is best for the country in these trying times. Whether it is McCain or Obama, each will need great strength and wisdom to guide the nation.“With confidence in our armed forces—with the unbounding determination of our people—we will gain the inevitable triumph—so help us God.”

John, you actually sound reasonable there and I believe if you could stick to that idea and those logical talking points without the extreme mantras, people on both sides of the political specter would listen.
This should be a powerful time for conservatives to redefine their party and clean house. Americans have always been suckers for a comeback story.
