oh, another thing, flu, a while back, I read a novel by an Chinese-American author (can’t remember her name) about growing up a New York tenement apartment with no hot water.
It used to be that an FOB was one with greasy hair and smelling of egg-rolls and chop-suey.
The new FOB decked out in Louis Vuitton and Chanel and driving a Bimmer has come a long way, baby.

I really have to go, but when I said fob and fobby, I was exactly referring to the “new look” that looks like a walking advertisement for Tiffany’s and the “new attitude” (snooty)…
It is entirely possible to completely go overboard. And many people have proven that it is entirely possible to spend a lmoney yetot of money and yet still dress completely tacky….which imho is a lot worse than someone who just dresses down and well, you know down to earth.
Just remember, there’s a favorite Abecrombie t-shirt, that sort of makes me laugh that I see some people wear…It says “You better make more than I can spend”
And seriously, do you think all those people carrying around LV bags are really carrying the real thing?

I agree.
But established White American families where pretty adamant about keeping their kids in line also. They didn’t have to try as hard as new immigrants because America is their turf.
Parents used to think that Rock’n Roll was subversive. Some think that Rap is subversive.
What if your kid had a passion for acting instead of an interest in microbes and biology? Would you support a career in Hollywood? My SIL’s brother is an aspiring actor. That’s what makes him happy. He’s been trying to make it for 20 years. The problem is that he doesn’t have a trust fund or other skills to rely upon to pay the bills.
I think that it’s great to pursue your passion. But it’s good to have a pragmatic base which can provide you a good living on which to fall back upon.
I’d love to be a world explorer. Only if a TV channel would give me a blank check.
