Vinegar, is there anything it can’t do?
JoshMay 28, 2015 at 11:23 AM #786760FlyerInHiGuestYes vinegar!
The problem is I never know what cycle the washer is at to add the vinegar.

So far, we’ve been using our Speed Queen washing machine very regularly — just about every day — and we love it! I had spent a ton of time doing research on washing machines before buying this one. The techs all seem to say the same thing…these don’t really break down and are made to last for decades.

Wish they made dishwashers like this, as we’re in the market for one of those now.[/quote]
I’m ok replacing appliances more often. They have become cheaper than in decades past. I remember when I was little watching the price is right. Appliances were luxury items back then.
Just went shopping for appliances for a rental. My own fridge is about 4 years old and I already hate it. I want a new one with fancy LED lights. The old lights are ugly.

As long as you don’t call yourself “green” or “environmentally responsible” you can do whatever you’d like. Just don’t go around complaining about other people’s wasteful or polluting habits.
Seriously, there is absolutely nothing worse for the environment than planned obsolescence and the marketing machine’s brainwashing people into thinking that everything needs to be “upgraded” or “updated” every few years. It’s a sickness in our society, IMHO.
June 23, 2015 at 9:10 PM #787454FlyerInHiGuestFor the mechanical engineers here… Would you buy a front load washer with a drum that is a little tilted off of the axis. Nowadays, they make them that way so that it’s easier to load. But I don’t think that I like that.
June 23, 2015 at 10:03 PM #787456HatfieldParticipantWe have a front load Whirlpool (LG) washer. I’m not impressed with it. On the plus side, it does seem to use very little water and detergent. On the minus side, it takes a long time – shortest normal wash cycle is 40 minutes. At the end it spends about 5 minutes doing this stupid BS where it just rotates the barrel slowly in one direction and then the other. I don’t think it adds anything to the proceedings.
The big issue for me though is that the outer barrel never completely drains. You can’t leave the door closed or else the washer gets funky and mildewy fast. So we have this fancy washer and we have to always leave the damn door open when it’s not being used. Even then, every now and then I still need to run an empty load with a little bleach to get rid of the funkiness.
Top load washers don’t have this issue because the door does not need to be air & water tight.
June 23, 2015 at 11:36 PM #787464temeculaguyParticipantI’ve had a kenmore HE3t set for about 7 years and love it, not sure if they even make it anymore. Plus I bought it used. I think my mom and sister have had theirs for 10 years. Mine has broken a time or two (washer only), but diagnostics were easy online and parts online were cheap. Repairs were simple, there are only a few parts and I’d say it took ten minutes or less. Appliances are actually quite simple to repair.
But I have the same issue as hatfield with having to leave the door open to the washer and I use this tide maintenance packet every six months on an empty load to flush the system.
June 26, 2015 at 6:14 AM #787536svelteParticipantI think the key is to have a dedicated laundry room that is not in the traffic path.
We have a laundry room that is off the hallway (not part of the hallway) so we can leave the front-loading washer door open at all times. Never had an odor issue.
We love the front loading (heh) and recommend getting the drawers underneath so that the washer/dryer doors are at a reasonable height. That eliminates stooping over and is much more of a plus than I would have ever imagined.
