Sedation, as is in a novacane(sp?) shot, or sedation as a gas mask…
Seems to me the gas mask is kinda overkill. A novacane(sp?) shot on the other hand seems reasonable to me.
You probably should get a gauge of your kid’s pain tolerance. For example, does your kid get crabby if he falls down on the ground? And the second thing is you’ll need to figure out what’s your kid’s comfort worth. It’s a personal decision.

March 11, 2009 at 10:28 AM #363893JustLurkingParticipantMy son who is 8 has never had a cavity, but my daughter (almost 5) had a small filling a few months ago. She was great and didn’t need any sedation or novacaine, but it was very minor work.
I think a pediatric dentist is a must for a 3 year old who needs work done. We go to Dr. Rawlings in Encinitas. Everyone on the staff is great and my kids actually look forward to going to the dentist.
I also think a lot depends on your child’s personality. My son would probably need elephant darts since he is a very anxious kid. My daughter is much more easy going and she breezed through it without a second thought. A good pediatric dentist will have a lot of experience putting kids at ease.

March 11, 2009 at 10:32 AM #363898NotCrankyParticipantSorry to hear that gn. Our middle child just came back from the dentist yesterday and has 3 cavities. He is almost five. He has them on each side of his mouth. The dentist is going to take care of them in two visits because he doesn’t want to numb up his entire mouth in one visit, but there is no sedation involved.
I am bummed for him.He doesn’t eat a lot of junk and we have been pretty good about brushing. I am really hoping we can do something about this before he gets older. These are all baby teeth.
