I would recommend SEabluffe in Leucadia. Its a gated community of townhomes and you probably will need to rent 2 of them but there are tons available for rent and they are very reasonable. It is on top of a bluff and has steps down to what is nearly a private beach. I have lots of friends that have stayed there when they come to visit and all loved it. If you are interested just google it and you will find the managment company that handles most of them.

I’ve used vrbo frequently and have always found a nice condo or house, depending on what we’re looking for, at a fair price. I’m sure there are plenty of good San Diego options at all the beach locations, and you usually work directly with the owner rather than an agency that tacks on extra fees. Most listings include lots of photos and some have helpful remarks from past renters. I’ve always found that you can bargain with the owners, especially in an off-season month like May. Good luck!
