OT: “Obama repackages stimulus plans with old promises”

My father passed away 7 years ago, but I thank you for your kind words. I am proud of him and there are not too many people my age that had a parent who lived through The Great Depression, literally traveling the Mother Road as the child of sharecroppers in a Model T. My father was always very honest that he didn’t join the Navy out of a profound patriotic duty. He joined it to eat, have clean clothes, a pair of shoes and have security mixed with youthful excitement.

My father was a staunch Texas Conservative for most of his life, but towards the end he softened as he realized that you can work and plan and work and plan, but things don’t always turn out as you had hoped and that social programs are not too bad when its your turn who needs them.

No public office for me, Zeit. I have no interest whatsoever in being a leader of a party or the face of a party. It requires more ego than I can muster. But I’d LOVE to be a David Axelrod, Karl Rove (in terms of his role, not his ideology!) or Joe Trippi, working behind the scenes for the right candidate, generating enthusiasm, developing strategies, and working to hold whoever is elected accountable for the change(s) they (or WE) pledge to bring. What many people fail to realize is that it’s not only important who wins the White House; it also matters who that person surrounds himself/herself with. A solid candidate with the wrong advisors can be a disaster. It’s like marriage: when you say “I do”, you’re not just hooking up with a mate; you’re hooking up with their family, as well. When we elect public officials, we often don’t know the extent of their associations and relationships and their advisers’ politics, biases or agendas. So in the end, many times we actually don’t know who we’re getting into bed with. I would simply like to be the voice of reason standing beside a good leader, helping her/him sift through the bullshit.
