Veritas,
I think you may have a little more black and white view of the world than I. I also think there are criminal elements within our own government that are as “evil”, in you words, as the people you envision in gitmo. Except their god is one of power and control, which they will do and say anything to honor.
Your prophet had some wise things to say about greed, love and anger management. He also seemed to be saying something about the danger of exchanging life’s necessities for tokens, then becoming bedazzled by the tokens themselves.
Beware of false prophets.
The greatest purveyor of violence in the world today is my own government.”
-MLKThe towers are gone now, reduced to bloody rubble, along with all hopes for Peace in Our Time, in the United States or any other country. Make no mistake about it: We are At War now — with somebody — and we will stay At War with that mysterious Enemy for the rest of our lives
It will be a Religious War, a sort of Christian Jihad, fueled by religious hatred and led by merciless fanatics on both sides. It will be guerilla warfare on a global scale, with no front lines and no identifiable enemy. Osama bin Laden may be a primitive “figurehead” — or even dead, for all we know — but whoever put those All-American jet planes loaded with All-American fuel into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon did it with chilling precision and accuracy. The second one was a dead-on bullseye. Straight into the middle of the skyscraper.

This is going to be a very expensive war, and Victory is not guaranteed — for anyone, and certainly not for anyone as baffled as George W. Bush. All he knows is that his father started the war a long time ago, and that he, the goofy child-President, has been chosen by Fate and the global Oil industry to finish it Now.

Hermann Goering, Hitler’s deputy:
“Why of course the people don’t want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally the common people don’t want war: neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.”
Managed blow back for political and economic gain….

January 25, 2009 at 9:48 AM #335446Allan from FallbrookParticipantarraya: Great stuff (as usual). I don’t know about you, but I’m going to miss Hunter S. Thompson, especially the nexus of gonzo journalism, firearms and alcohol.
I wasn’t aware of that quote from Goring. I also didn’t realize he was that politically aware. Of course, that quote was probably made well before he succumbed to drug and alcohol addiction and spent millions of dollars in stolen blood money on his paean to Teutonic virility, his hunting lodge, Karinhall. Little known fact about Goring: He was a fighter ace in WWI who flew with Manfred von Richthofen (the Red Baron).
Good thing he was such an incompetent buffoon, though, or WWII in Europe might have turned out very differently (and not in a good way).

January 25, 2009 at 1:06 PM #335683afx114ParticipantI heard an interesting theory on Moyers last night. Obviously, Obama needs to retain the Democratic majority in Congress in 2010. He’s attempting to do so by keeping the Republicans placated over the next two years. Hence why we see him reaching across the aisle on so many issues (resulting in all of the Obama == Bush posts here). The key is that in 2010, districts get redrawn because of the census. So Obama needs to keep his majority in order to benefit from the redrawn districts in 2010. Obama is not playing the one month game or even the one year game. He’s playing the four (or eight) year game.
