GuestCapitalism: Free markets determine what is produced.
Socialism: Government determines what is produced.
All defense spending is a form of socialism (certainly by the loose definition of socialism that is used these days…)
Socialism isn’t always a bad thing – it’s often the best system when central planning is important, like the military.
Socialism goes bad when the government decides to produce things that aren’t needed. Like the make-work projects in North Korea or the old USSR. These have the appearance of economic activity, but they are just wasted resources. Given the ridiculous proportions of the military-industrial complex today, there is no doubt that much of it provides no value. In the examples cited above, the military is even acknowledging that these programs are useless, but we continue to pay billions for them. It’s socialism gone wrong.
