I’m not looking for a medal here, but in my family’s case (well, the 3/8 that didn’t immigrate around 1900), we have several Union officers and an underground RR family. What exactly did we do to encourage slavery?

SDEngineer – I stand corrected. However, I’d bet that we are still near the top in “potential” mobility, versus actual mobility. Measures of mobility correlate parents and kids’ earnings. So countries undergoing dramatic change see big mobility.
But how much of this is choice? Most posters here could be loaded if we had chosen different lives – law school or MBA and a cutthroat career – instead of engineering or education. I don’t feel trapped in the middle class. I like it here. I know how to move up or down but I like my job.

June 5, 2008 at 1:07 PM #217532CBadParticipantUh, I’m lost. Why is Obama vs. McCain suddenly a discussion on slave reparations? I mean really, this is the most important issue in your mind and would sway your vote one way or the other?
