OT: Is Swine Flu Pandemic Warning exaggerated? And who’s really at risk?

The UN may be jumping the gun here.

“The mildest pandemics of the 20th century killed at least a million people worldwide, according to the WHO’s data, while old-fashioned seasonal flu strikes every nation yearly and kills an estimated 250,000 to 500,000. As of Thursday, when the pandemic was declared, H1N1 swine flu had killed only 144 people total — fewer than succumb daily to seasonal flu annually. And in Mexico, where the outbreak began and where it has been the most severe, cases peaked quickly, in just four weeks…..”

I also have another pet peeve in that the warnings on the age ranges most suspeptible and ones actually seeing the most impact are in disagreement:

“People aged 30-50, pregnant women or people suffering from chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes or obesity are at highest risk, Chan told a news conference.”

But, at the end of this same article:

“The virus disproportionately makes younger people sick. Some 57 percent of U.S. cases were among people aged 5 to 24, and 41 percent of those hospitalized were in this younger age group.”

Interesting that the people at “highest risk” aren’t the ones filling out the rosters of those actually being infected and hospitalized.

While this thing is something to keep and eye on, I do believe raising it to a 6 of 6 is premature….
