Funny how it takes less than 10 posts to bring up politics and racism in a thread on the iPad. You could start a thread on beanie babies and the same thing would happen.
I love the Internet π
P.S. – Amazon rocks. Unless you’re a seller, in which case it sucks. I was quite happy and didn’t feel the least bit guilty about not paying sales tax (or shipping) on my TV. When the state government stops using my money to educate and medicate illegals and fund outrageous pensions, I’ll consider voluntarily giving them more sales tax.
There, now the thread includes immigration issues and public employee unions. Anyone care to bring up global warming or accusations of Apple using child labor?

True.
BUT… California residents should pay sales taxed on internet purchases (where the merchants were not required to collect taxes) on their state income tax return at the end of the year.
So my Japanese friend, who is not a California resident and doesn’t file a tax return, does indeed get a pass on paying sales taxes, if the merchants don’t collect the taxes.
FYI, your upcoming purchases in the UK are technically subject to CA sales taxes when you bring those goods back to California. You can pay when you file your state income tax return.
True that sales taxes in USA are not refundable to tourists.
But because VAT taxes are generally refundable to American tourists abroad, in the spirit of reciprocity, I said that my friend’s puchases in USA should theoretically be refunded of sales taxes. That will not happen in practice.
My friend is so far free to buy online without any requirement to remit sales taxes.
Internet sales tax collection is an evolving area of law.
Here’s a timely recent article.

I’m sorry…for someone who is such a cheerleader for big government…I find the fact that you are so intent on evading sales taxes…well, ironic.[/quote]
My first post here… and I am French (living in SD) so pardonnez-moi mon anglais…
Why does a simple question about the iPad need to become a political issue?
Brian is just trying to save his friend anywhere between $40 and $70 depending on what version she will end up purchasing. Nothing wrong with that in my opinion…Anyway I bought my iPad (first generation) at the UCSD bookstore about two weeks after it was officially released:
http://bookstore.ucsd.edu/computers/hardware/apple.htmThey were and still are selling $100 under the retail price. Even with the sales tax, it is still a sweet deal. I am not sure if you have to be a UCSD student to purchase electronics there. I am no longer a student and the guy at the store didn’t asked me any student ID.
You may also consider Wal-Mart though I doubt that the iPad 2 will be available right away.

Good luck!
