OT: Interesting “Public Works” Project in San Diego…

…So I’m driving almost daily in Rancho Bernardo, on Bernardo Center drive, to where the nokia/sony/etc buildings are.

The roads are absolutely major suck. Potholes galore… Previous potholes patched with uneven asphalt such that the road is incredibly bumpy… Lane marking fading/etc.

A few weeks ago, I saw road crews out there, and was getting excited they were finally going to pave the roads, or at least fix the potholes.. Did they???

Fat chance..No luck… Guess what they were doing????

Adding brand spanking new asphalt and slury seal to the center medium divider. Yup that’s right, not just a small portion of the center divider. The entire center divider on bernardo center drive…
That’s right, the part that no cars actually drive on.. I guess the enormous amount of pedestrians walking in the center divider must have really worn down the center divider pavement and justified a complete brand new aspalt/slury seal with higher priority than fixing the roads!

What about the roads you say? Nothing… absolutely nothing. Yup… That’s them nice looking center dividers we got there now on Bernardo Center Drive.

Well, I guess if you can’t really fix the problems, you might as well spend the public dollars making things look nice that cars don’t go on! After all, it’s all in the budget!

Gee, ever wonder why our roads are crap??? And don’t say foul weather has anything to do with it. How often does it rain/snow in San Diego????

Almost all of Bernardo Center Drive west of I-15 has a planter filled with plants in the center divide, save a one block section between Maturin and W Bernardo Drive which has a raised section filled with blacktop.

Are you talking about that one block section?

East of Camino Del Norte part. Near W. Bernardo. I think they took about an entire week to make it a blacktop..And the roads right around there are horrible. What gives?

It costs lest than fixing the surface and still counts as 1 project completed against the backlog.

It’s a center divider that no one walks on, and there’s nothing wrong with the center divider. Meanwhile the roads are complete disasters right next to it, several potholes left unfilled. I just thought it was ironic. Why do you need to slurry seal a center divider at all? They can’t even fill in the potholes on the same road, and here was an entire crew sealing the center divider.

We noticed this weekend that they have now paved the roadway itself. 🙂

Not sure why they started with the center divide – maybe to ensure that redoing the center divide didn’t damage newly laid roadway?

Now, if they can just redo the section going down the hill to 15…that part is a disaster…

I know. I was excited that they redid the section finally..
And I agree about the part going to the 15.
