ParticipantThat would make for actual “change” as opposed to the “meet the new boss, same as the old boss” change we saw from Obama. I might actually vote if he ran.

ParticipantProblem is that his bluntness wouldn’t fly in much of the US. As they say “in NYC (NJ is much the same), they say ‘f-u’ when they mean ‘howdy, have a nice day.'” “In L.A., they say ‘have a nice day’ when they really mean ‘f-u.'”
His actions after the hurricane spoke to the fact that he really cared for his constituents, despite the pigheaded bluntness he displays.

ParticipantHe has also called for an amendment to the NJ Constitution making marriage between same-sex couples illegal and opposes marriage equality in general. He has also said he will never evolve on this issue, even if it becomes politically unpopular; and his position will become *very* unpopular.

ParticipantI don’t have a dog in the gay-marriage fight either way. But NJ already legalized unions with basically the same rights and privileges in 2006, and Christie has no plans to alter that law. If I had my say, I’d make ALL marriages (gay, straight, canine, bovine) into “civil unions” at the state level and make “marriage” the sole province of whatever cult the parties choose to adhere to. This would solve the problem of “equality” without annoying the zealots as much.

Completely agree

ParticipantThis being said, I’d be more concerned about Christie’s official support for the death penalty, which I consider an abomination in a modern country. Justice systems aren’t perfect, and it’s very hard to un-execute someone who was exonerated five years posthumously.
However, the Feds already have one (thankfully very seldom applied), and as President, he can’t exactly force states to enact one under local statutes.

Exactly. Why is marriage tied to any sense of a legal status anyway? So they can tax Love, I suppose.

Right. I mean – whoever is president isn’t going to hold your exact ideologies and they aren’t a dictator and can’t force them into existence. It takes an act of congress.
I’m thinking to get someone in the white house that will prevent the meltdown of a debt-ridden nation with a spending problem, and/or take on the reserve banking system, I’d put up with someone who had different viewpoints on other issues.

GuestThis is for you spdrun…
How do you feel about Chris Christie these days. Such a venal bastard, I think.

ParticipantHe’s a corrupt idiot, but a somewhat useful one? And he did sign judicial/bail reform in NJ which is humane, as well as fiscally responsible.

ParticipantHe stood up to the NJ teachers union, which I thought took guts. Especially in the “Soprano State” – not my name, but the title of a book by two AP Writers: https://www.amazon.com/Soprano-State-Jerseys-Culture-Corruption/dp/031260257X
