Appearance is very important. most of the deterance from a security system is the sign. when you are away, notify the paper to stop delivery, have multiple lights on at different times at different areas of the house, even program the radio to come on at various times. prevention is very much the key here.

if a would be burgerer is not deterred by the sign, he/she is unlikely to be deterred by the siren or the dog.

It’s very hard for someone to tell the difference between talk radio and actual conversation when listening outside the house. We also stop the postal mail service and have a neighbor pickup anything left at the front of the house ie marketing flyers, UPS packages etc.

another important thing is try to park both cars in the garage as part of your routine.

if you are away, the lack of parked car on the driveway or the non-moving car on the driveway would not be a dead giveaway.

I’m honestly not worried about someone breaking into my house when we’re gone. Sure, it would be upsetting, but it’s just ‘stuff’. Breaking in when we’re home is an entirely different story. This story scared the crap out of me because I never answer the door for anyone during the day.
