really? I’m feeling kind of chipper and optimistic. Usually Im the worst case scenario kind of guy. The more negative things are, the more positive I feel, that things got bad but didn’t disintegrate. i think everything’s actually gonna be ok. sure the stock market will crash, global warming will cause mass civil unrest, wackadoodles with guns will be shooting others on the streets, but basically, things will proceed.
Note to self. Stock up on toilet paper and instant noodles. Again.
if the general mood is one of doom and gloom, being an emotional contrarian, I am compelled to think these are pretty good times.
And you know, in retrospect, i really do believe that we will look back on these times as relatively good. bickering about whether trump is a “bad man” violating the constitution, after real problems, like mass homelessness and starvation in the USA due to global warming, will seem like a dream. truly, we are living in the golden age right now, where we can even think of stocking up on toilet paper without selling our children into slavery.
September 10, 2020 at 12:08 PM #819607svelteParticipantYeah, its like that post running around FB right now.
We whine and complain about how bad 2020 is – and it’s not pleasant that’s for sure – but think about someone living 1900-1950.
They went through WWI. Then the 1918 epidemic as soon as that ended. Then the Great Depression. Then the Dust Bowl (which affected a wider area than most think). Then WW2. Those decades included many riots on topics such as unionization and race (see 1921 Tulsa race riots).
Throw in polio, TB, and a few other unpleasantries and 2020 pales in comparison.
September 10, 2020 at 1:39 PM #819608scaredyclassicParticipant2020 may be my best year ever. the lockdown helped me get my head together, feel better than ever.
doing lots of work by video, from anywhere, now.
Sure, the vibe feels increasingly like a technological fascist dystopia, but day-to-day, I’m enjoying life way more in 2020 than 2010, worried about real estate transactions, young kids, money tight,
hell i’m even loving life when it was 114 degrees outside last week, i was in my pool, hanging out, waiting for the end of the world, happy.
i might change my tune if i get the cove and cannot breathe, but if it continues like this, i am in halcyon times.
I’m going to say I’m at least 40% happier than I was 10 years ago, even though I’m old, closer to death, have a foot injury…life is beautiful
September 14, 2020 at 4:55 PM #819660Rich ToscanoKeymasterAs I said in another post: “I understand that it’s a popular pastime to spread misinformation and conspiracy theories about this pandemic, but please don’t do it here.”
Disinformation like this does real harm. I don’t want it on this site. Thank you.

Hi Rich. Just saw this now. What, precisely, is the “misinformation” or the “conspiracy theory” that you’re referring to? I’ve linked directly to the organizations’ own videos. I just want to be sure that we can have a clear understanding of the definition of these terms.

October 26, 2020 at 7:33 AM #819992CA renterParticipantIn response to another poster who asked about the authoritarianism that I’m concerned about, here are some of the disturbing trends that I’ve seen.
Who are the tyrants?
Ask yourself:
-Who is censoring what you can read, write, speak, and hear?
-Who wants to limit what the press can write about?
-Who is demanding that you think only certain thoughts — threatening you with physical violence, the loss of a job, or social ostracism if you venture out of their narrow scope of “acceptable” beliefs?
-Who wants to control where you can go, with whom you can go, when you can go, and under what conditions you can go?
-Who wants to take away your ability to worship when, where, and with whom you want to worship?
-Who wants to make sure that you don’t have the ability to defend yourself against a tyrannical government?
-Who wants to impose a technocratic surveillance state, where everything you do or say or read or write or buy is monitored and recorded?
-Who demands that you take a knee, or prostrate yourself at their feet?
-Who demands that you raise a fist for their cause, like a closed-fisted Nazi salute, or risk bodily or other harm if you refuse?
-Who believes that violence is an acceptable means of forcing decent, law-abiding people to obey their commands?
-Ask yourself who wants to have the power to shut down your business and control your ability to provide for yourself and your family. Who advocates for policies and movements that put small businesses out of business, once again centralizing power and forcing people to transact only with a handful of large companies who work hand-in-hand with these authoritarian rulers?
-Who wants to concentrate all of the world’s wealth and power into the fewest possible hands under a one-world government that will mandate where you can live, what you can eat, how much energy you can use, and how much water you can use to bathe and drink? https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/sustainable-consumption-production/
-Who wants to force people out of their cars and limit their ability to freely transport themselves when and where they want (FTR, I like mass transit, but not if it’s the only option available)?
-Who attacks people who practice self-defense, instead of punishing the criminals who attack them? -Who encourages people to snitch on their friends and neighbors if they don’t comply with authoritarian orders?
-Who pushes for national or global control vs. local control (centralized power is the hallmark of authoritarianism)?
-Who advocates for authoritarian lockdowns and universal mandates vs. education, decentralized policies, and freedom?
-Who encourages violent mobs to confront people in their homes, threatening not only their target, but their target’s family and neighbors as well?
-Who advocates for “Truth and Reconciliation” commissions to investigate and punish people who think or vote differently than they do? https://twitter.com/RBReich/status/1317614803704115200
Seriously ponder these questions and ask yourself if you can honestly answer who the tyrants are.

October 26, 2020 at 10:09 AM #819993spdrunParticipantWho is censoring what you can read, write, speak, and hear?
-Who wants to limit what the press can write about?
No one — we have more diversity of news (real and fake) and access to media than we did 20 years ago.
-Who wants to control where you can go, with whom you can go, when you can go, and under what conditions you can go?
-Who wants to take away your ability to worship when, where, and with whom you want to worship?
No one, outside of temporary pandemic restrictions that also existed in 1918-20.
-Who wants to impose a technocratic surveillance state, where everything you do or say or read or write or buy is monitored and recorded?
Bankster scum, who tend to lean conservative, are pushing cashlessness. Laws demanding that stores accept good, old-fashioned, privacy-friendly cash are being pushed in liberal cities by justice liberals. Breaking up tech firms, limiting police camera surveillance, banning facial recognition use, again, coming from the left.
-Who demands that you take a knee, or prostrate yourself at their feet?
-Who demands that you raise a fist for their cause, like a closed-fisted Nazi salute, or risk bodily or other harm if you refuse?
Nobody … they choose to protest that way, they don’t demand that you do the same.
-Who believes that violence is an acceptable means of forcing decent, law-abiding people to obey their commands?
The man who said “punch them in the face,” “rough them up a bit,” and “I can shoot a man on Fifth Avenue” maybe?
-Ask yourself who wants to have the power to shut down your business and control your ability to provide for yourself and your family. Who advocates for policies and movements that put small businesses out of business, once again centralizing power and forcing people to transact only with a handful of large companies who work hand-in-hand with these authoritarian rulers?
Giuliani’s policies turned large swathes of Manhattan into Disneyland. Which party and ideology did he represent?
-Who wants to force people out of their cars and limit their ability to freely transport themselves when and where they want (FTR, I like mass transit, but not if it’s the only option available)?
No one … some people just want mass transit as an option and to move towards cleaner/electric car use.
October 26, 2020 at 12:44 PM #819994scaredyclassicParticipanti don’t get to practice my religion as I want to. The buddhist monks at deerpark monastery in escondido shut down way early, before everyone else, and they’re still shut down, no sunday meditation walks, no group events, no retreats.
the buddhists are pretty smart.
I’m not pissed at them; I send them money anyway, every month. it’s a comfort that they’re there, still doing their monk thing, keeping the spot fresh for me when they feel safe for me to go back.
we meet on zoom once in a while and keep the faith. well, not really any specific faith, but the practice… i listen to dharma talks and try to practice the five trainings. currently reading “the book of householder koans; waking up in the land of attachments”
it seems like it’s mainly christians who are losing their shit over govt control on their “worship”. maybe this is a good opportunity not to pray in public…maybe this is what Jesus actually wants, maybe he was getting really irritated by all the public proclamation of faith……
wait that sounds pretty judgy and unbuddhist. i retract
the signs are all around us; at least for jdueo-christians. the buddhists probably believe all signs are illusory
October 26, 2020 at 1:39 PM #819995spdrunParticipantYep, a lot of fundie Christians and Ultra-Orthodox Jews losing their plots.
October 26, 2020 at 6:21 PM #819998scaredyclassicParticipantMakes me ashamed to identify as jewish.
Who are these nutballs.
These are not the secularized jews of tge 50s 60s 70s.
These people are wacked out. Buddhist support for trump is very very low.
October 26, 2020 at 7:15 PM #819999spdrunParticipantAll religions have their nutball sects, even Buddhists … there’s quite a bit of history of Buddhist pogroms against Muslims in South Asia.
October 27, 2020 at 9:39 AM #820003scaredyclassicParticipantOnce state power and religion mix, peace, love buddha and jesus can go all to hell.
October 27, 2020 at 12:44 PM #820007phasterParticipantactually think a critical understanding of religion can be very helpful when framing an issue
for example a few days ago had a suggestion to view a video by Lorena Gonzales and Nathan Fletcher explaining FAIRNESS WRT prop 15 the “split roll” property tax
https://www.facebook.com/100008416066570/videos/2555416554748855/
what I noticed just like in another news segment at a fancy shopping mall in OC
is recognized what seems to be happening is a case of “envy” (because as a kid who went to catholic high school where I learned way back in the day about the seven deadly sins)
‘Attitude of gratitude’ keeps deadly sin of envy in check (catholic perspective)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VeCvxERam8another thing I did in high school was get a pilots license, so at a pretty young age became very aware of a culture of safety, also learned pilot error is the cause of most aviation accidents and in a crash investigation pilot mental state is looked into (for example)
point being, being prepared running the numbers before hand and looking at an issue from multiple points of view (like religious teachings) dramatically improves the odds of survival
sadly we’re kinda up $hit creek simply because politicians like Lorena Gonzales, Nathan Fletcher AND TRUMP for that matter should be thought of as akin to idiot pilots that fly by the seat their pants in the clouds and their only talent is the ability to brain wash people into liking them (sort of like cult leaders) AND like cult leaders who want to hold on power they vilify the other side along saying their ideas have zero merit
sigh,…
PS WRT prop 15 another reason I don’t feel passage of the “split-roll” idea is recall an idea from “game theory”
Ultimatum Game
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTg9qyMTIUQhave been following the polls and expect liberals to drink the kookaid and buy into the idea that small business will not experience any collateral damage
perhaps I am over thinking the issue, but knowing about the “ultimatum game” actually think passage will create an even bigger divide between the very rich and poor because as I see things those at the economic controls (democratic politicians and thier partisan supporters) are inducing something akin to pilot induced oscillations (which is going to doom fledgling black owned businesses)
https://news.yahoo.com/black-owned-businesses-prop-15-172539108.html
and further down the line limit the ability of fledgling “green” businesses to grow to scale in CA
https://climateone.org/audio/steve-schmidt-and-varshini-prakash-disrupting-climate-politics
have to wonder if this comes to pass will democratic politicians and thier partisan supporters think about fairness in assigning blame????
