GuestI’d save my own dog over a foreign tourist. The key word is foreign, hence not one of us.

If this isn’t a joke, I am saddened.

ParticipantI’d say that “most” human life is more valuable than a dog’s. A genocidal mass murderer? A serial killer? A swindler who probably drove some to suicide? I have my doubts.
Not that I’d personally press the switch for the electric chair, but I’m not sure if I’d go out of my way to save their lives (over any other life form) either.

ParticipantOur dogs flatter us.
In an insecure age, the dog enjoys full employment.
I despise dogs.

Human v. Dog. I cannot believe this is even debatable. You may believe in capital punishment. That’s a separate issue. But to equate human life with a dog? Basically you are saying the property of another –dog — is more valuable than a human.
I’d Need Time To Fully Articulate How Fucked Up This is…BUT it is….and the world’s definitely going to the dogs….

GuestI agree that there is a little bit of a whack psychological element to dog love. But the same is true to almost everything that we do.
A dog is a dog, but a beautiful exceptional animal is truly worth loving.
Did you see the movies Hachi or warhorse?
I’ve had the privilege of owing a beautiful, exceptionally well behaved dog. She brought me my slippers and shoes everyday. She could distinguish between different objects by name and fetch them.
Btw, people take their dogs to public places to show them off. When I walked my dog people would always talk to me because she’s so cute. I had to get a “do not pet” jacket for her.
If I wasn’t gone so often I’d have a dog.

GuestLove and responsibility are different things. You can love a dog and be a n irresponsible owner. Dogs need exercise and motivation. You need to spend time with the dog so that it’s not bored.
IMO, a happiest dog is one that lives on a farm and has a job to do.
Our society is very influenced by the lives of landed aristocrats. We try to emulate them from wanting to own a manor house, a coach, a dog, a horse or pony (for those who can afford it). The auto is like the coach and the horse combined.

ParticipantTo begin with, no unattached dog has any value above market price if any. It’s only value is the emotional investment one human imparts to the dog.
Those feelings… that attachment…will never be something that reasonably can be chosen over another person’s life…it may have a monetary value for its loss. But it is not so valuable as to equate a feeling, a relationship, with a human. For instance one may have a sentimental attachment a strong feeling for a family heirloom that is irreplaceable and laden w emotion. But it’s value is never equated with an actual person.
Maybe this all got crazy after planet of the apes….

No, I’m saying that the lives of some humans — serial killers, genocidal psychopaths, people who prey on the aged or very young — have negative value. Would I throw the switch in the electric chair? Probably not. Do I support the death penalty? In general, no. But I think that there are many non-human life forms that are worth more than certain sorry examples of humankind.

A foreign tourist is not one of us, but a dog is?
On the one hand, it seems like you must be a troll because you can’t possibly be that fucked up.
On the other hand, survey says… 40%. Heck, you’re almost in the majority.
40% of the people who drive in cars on the same streets as us and who work with us and who…I guess, are our friends… are this fucked up.
This argument over Dahmer vs. a dog has kind of gotten us away from the foreign tourist vs. dog issue. Am I the only one who finds 40% an extremely scary number?

Guestthe question was your dog (not any dog) or a foreign tourist.
I think that 40% would save their own iphone or handbag over a foreign tourist. the word “foreign” is in the question for a reason. Foreign means someone who doesn’t look like you. or someone who you do not have cultural affinity with.
It might be fucked up, but I think people would save their own skin and property first.

GuestHaha.. NYC is American in name and in the imagination only. It’s practically a foreign country to the majority of Americans.
