So my parents brought this to my attention. Apparently, there has been a settlement to class action lawsuits filed against DeBeers for allegedly price fixing diamonds…Supposedly, folks that have purchased diamonds January 1, 1994, through March 31, 2006 *may* be eligible for a partial refund. To my understanding the settlement is tiered, depending on how much was actually spent on a diamond This could be from anywhere from 6% to 60% of the original purchase price. For examples diamonds purchased in the $10k+ range could eligible for 45% rebate.
I filed. I bought a loose diamond from BlueNile.com about two years ago, still had the receipt. The claim filing process took about 10 minutes. I’m not holding my breath. The payout is fixed and is diluted by the total number of claims. The press has picked-up on the story and the settlement has been widely discussed. I would be tickled to get 10% – that would double what I expect from the stimulus package.
