The latest is that Peters is ahead by 4491 votes today (and still counting with 10-15K ballots remaining to be counted) for the SD Mayor post. Peters was actually declared the winner by the AP!
All I can say folks, is that for a variety of reasons (namely, the “strong mayor initiative voted in in June 2010), DeMaio would have cost the City a FORTUNE in legal fees (for naught) due to his insistence to litigate the SD pension agreements which were contracted long before he was even a blip on the radar screen.
In short, his wacky “pension reform” ideas are against the law. As such, they would be laughed out of court … but not before costing City a FORTUNE in legal fees which would be borne by its taxpayers. See:
Due to his views on “no-win” issues, residents of America’s Finest City would have ended up being embarrassed (and fleeced) if DeMaio had been voted in.
This is partly because the San Diego City Attorney cannot represent these issues (on behalf of City) in a court of law because they themselves were one of the charging parties at PERB (where any potential lawsuit would have originated from). Therefore, these duties would have to be contracted out to the private bar … at taxpayer expense.

My bad. I didn’t look closely at the link I provided. I maintain that it still would have been s BIG mistake to elect DeMaio to represent the 52nd (as opposed to Peters).
HOWEVER, DeMaio’s election as the Rep for the 52nd would have been DISASTROUS for the City of SD.
Hopefully, Demaio has now realized that he should “throw in the towel” on his “future political aspirations.” The people have spoken … so …. good bye …

Looks like DeMaio conceded. It looks like the absentee ballots were heavily in favor of Peters and he jumped out to a lead of more than 4,000 votes after trailing on election night.
At least in San Diego it does seem like younger voters are more likely to vote by mail and tend to lean more Democratic than those who show up on election day.
