I’ve seen most people just buy closer to the bottom list price without many upgrades and just live with the cheap stuff, then after a few years, replace it.
They don’t give you any credit if you don’t so you might as well use the cheap carpet or what not for a few and upgrade in 5.
The things dealing with extra rooms, baths, etc…are probably worth not having to deal with changing the floor plan though so those are probably worth the upgrade prices.
With young kids, you also are glad to see the carpet get all messed up and imagine when you will replace all of it when they’re more grown up.[/quote]

Sure, they don’t have to as they have you as a captive buyer.
Doesn’t mean you can’t ask. Worse they can say is no.
I’ve successfully done it on a number of items. On flooring and big ticket items, when upgrading over the base tier. It’s a win win as they make more margins on the upgrades over just slapping in the base stuff that the builder negotiated for.
Don’t ask the builder. Ask the up-grader in the show room at the time of pricing out and signing off on the upgrade.
I agree. It never hurt to ask. That applies in everything. I’ve heard of people getting cheap upgrade to 1st class, cheap upgrade to Hotel suites, etc.
