That’s another good point. If gas wasn’t subsidized here you’d see a greater percentage of ridership. Gas in Spain was 10 euro a gallon, roughly $13 a gallon here. Would you better support mass transit if gas was $13/gallon?

February 9, 2010 at 10:48 PM #511544briansd1GuestIf you guys think that we’ll have good train/public transport system in our lifetime, you’re smoking something.
The trolley in SD doesn’t even go into the airport.
I was in Las Vegas recently and I had time to kill so I decided to take the bus to the Strip.
You’d think that Las Vegas, with millions of tourists visiting the Strip, would have a good bus system to efficiently bring people onto the strip.
However, no user-friendly public transport system exists.
The riders are there, but it seems to me like the powers that be don’t want a good public bus system.
Big missed opportunity to have an environmentally friendly system that can make money from the huge potential ridership.
Here’s my recent experience in Vegas.
– At LAS airport, there are no signs pointing to the public bus station, but HUGE signs telling you where to take the taxis and paid shuttles.
– The information counter was closed but there was an electronic kiosk. Still nothing about public transport on it.
– I was determined, so I asked around (not easy). You have to go to Level Zero and walk out into the hotel shuttle parking to, then find the bus stop. It’s a tiny, dark bus stop where some service workers were waiting. The fact that bus stop is a tiny steel shelter in a grand airport is very telling of the priorities.
– I took #109A to the South Terminal (nice terminal).
– Then I had to transfer to the #301/Duce to the strip. The Duce is a great bus that goes along the strip and stops in front of the major casinos/hotels.
Why not make the Duce bus go directly into the airport and advertise it prominently with large signs? Everyone would take the bus into town.
That would kill the taxis and the private limousine/shuttle services.

February 9, 2010 at 11:27 PM #511554briansd1GuestBTW, just for context, I take public transport more than most.
I take the bus from Lindberg Field to the Trolley station at America Plaza, downtown, when I travel to and from the airport.
I take the Amtrak to Orange County and LA about once every other month.
The trolley and the coaster, if they went into the airport would get much more use. People would just drop-off their friends and relatives at the trolley/coaster station instead of driving into the airport.
