Participant
If what ALL what sdr said is true, and that’s all it was to it, then the guy was probably a 19-20 yr old sleeping with his 16-17 yr old GIRLFRIEND. I don’t find that abnormal or reprehensible. I am not encouraging it, I am not saying that makes it right, and I wouldn’t want my kids do something like that but it doesn’t show that this guy was interested in MUCH younger kids, he was in a relationship. I am not condoning what he did, but for this to be labeled sex offender FOR LIFE… Some other charge.if it was rape, then make it rape charge – but in this case, just a few years difference doesn’t make him a monster that molests minors in general of any age… Do you know how many minors have sex in high school?! How many get caught?. And by the way, I have a daughter. If I would be able to verify the story, and that was ALL it was to it,it wouldn’t bother me at all if he lives next door.
Scarlett, the general public does not understand that in CA, if a minor’s parent(s) turn their daughter’s “boyfriend” into the authorities for statutory rape, then they will have to register as a sex-offender annually and every time they move (for life) in accordance with Penal Code section 290 (as a requirement of their probation).
Back in November, we discussed this phenomenon in detail here:

It starts halfway down page 2 to halfway down page 3.

I have a daughter (7 yrs old) and I have met this guy and known his wife for years. It happened when they were kids (though he was a year legally too old and she a year legally too young). This is not a case of 30 year old guy molesting a 12 year old girl without consent. This was consentual sex between teenagers. In this case he ran into an angry father who has left him paying for something millions of teenagers do everyday. Sorry you feel that way. I am concerned though that you as an adult put yourself ina postion to have the opportunity with a minor.January 15, 2011 at 7:25 AM #654324sdrealtor

ParticipantI missed that thread. I know that it’s often due to the girl’s family. Sometimes though it was indeed rape even though they were dating – but that still should be treated differently. Rape should be punished harshly even if it’s between boyfriend/girlfriend and a first time punishment should be enough (maybe in case of repeated rape charges they should also register for life)- but that is still very different than a pedophile. It simply is too indiscriminating.
I totally agree with you and CAR that it should be a different category/offense/charge for that.
it’s a shame that people are having to deal with the registration requirements decades later when all they were doing was having normal, teenage relationships with their boyfriends/girlfriends.
.
Ok. sorry for the thread hijack.
