Leaving SD for Orlando

I feel you Cardiff, I too am preparing to head out of San Diego, in my case for the 2nd time in 3 years. I left for Colorado in 2007. Came back for a job promotion in Sept 2008, but that job went sour real quick as the economy tanked. I thought I missed California, but it turns out I was happier in Colorado. We had better connections with friends there, a much better and cheaper house(owned, not rented), generally great weather, tons of things to do, and enough culture and food to keep us happy. San Diego has weather and the ocean but we don’t use the ocean, so really all it has is weather.

But for us the decision comes down to this. For our income we can buy around $500-$600K. Here in California we can buy a tiny run down dump with no yard in a crummy part of town. In Colorado we can have anything we want – 5 acres in the hills, a brand new hip loft in the heart of town, a mcmansion in suburbia. We want land and privacy, and we can’t have that here unless we move to Valley Center, which doesn’t work for commute purposes. That, and the connections we made out there were much stronger, better overall quality of relationships out there. We’re also considering the DC area, where I’m from and still have family there, but the real estate difference from here to there is minimal so that is a tough decision.

Either way, I’m totally in sync with your reasoning for leaving San Diego. You may miss parts of this place at first, but in the long run and in the big picture, you will probably be much better off. Good luck.

Well CB I dont really know you but as someone about to make the biggest decision I have ever made by moving countries all I can say is best of luck in your new home.

What concerns me quite a bit are all the relatively anti SD comments as a result of your post. We are selling up here in South Africa, leaving family and good friends behind to give our 3 young children a better life. After a number of visits to the USA we have chosen SD mainly for the weather and also for the large ex SA population in SD who have been very supportive. Reading the posts above starts giving us second thoughts!! Are we making a mistake??

We bought a pretty nice place here in that price range last August. Yeah you can get a lot more in Colorado but $600K in SD will get you a decent pad. That said I could see moving to CO some day for many of the same reasons you mention.

Look if I win MegaMillions in Florida I’ll be back. Quite simply living in a place like RSF or near the beach would be the hardest decision I’d have to make. The only thing I can think of to compete would be to live in Cleveland and invest in luxury loges at the gund to watch Lebron.

Most of the folks here aren’t really hating on SD. SD is a great place if you are a smart entrepreneur, executive, sales guru, etc. If you are just middle class and don’t come here with any kind of bank roll for downpayment it can be tough. In my case when I came from the midwest I had to cough up basically all my savings/stock to unload the house I was in. So I started out in the hole and this is not a place you want to start out that way. My salary was more than adequate if I hadn’t had the noose around my neck starting out. That and my wife took a big pay cut as a teacher since only a tiny private school had a position open.
