I was thinking the same thing. Rather than an abrupt, sharp, shocking drop, they are dragging this out for years as the declines continue slowly w/an occasional little rise to raise one’s spirits and give them hope, but nevertheless continuing down. All the while, the government will claim to have tried their best to help.
In a perfect world they would like to spread it out for years. However spreading it out is based on big assumptions that I think are improbable.
I think it is more like the little dutch boy with his fingers in the dyke. Plugging one hole, only to find another one spring open. Soon to be overwhelmed with leaks until the damn finally crumbles.

There would have been a tsunami had the government not interfered.
The slow continual trickle will achieve the same thing. The pain is just spread out over a longer time and over several generations.
The real estate market will not return to normal until it’s comprised of organic supply and demand.
It might be the same thing for the people who are underwater and being foreclosed on. But it’s defintely not the same for buyers. A tsunami would have caused the who market to go into extreme undervalue teritory. We are far from that with this shenanigans.Btw, we probably wouldn’t have a massive bubble if the government didn’t interfere either, but they did. So, we should have seen the intervention coming a mile away.
