“Pride” in many contexts really means not ashamed.
Gay pride, black pride, etc. means that a person is not ashamed of being gay or black and that they won’t let others shame them for something that is not shameful.
There’s nothing shameful about being from the south. But the Confederate flag is a symbol of The Confederacy – the violent attempt to form a new government specifically to protect the institution of slavery under law.
That’s as shameful as it gets.
(Technically the “stars and bars” isn’t the Confederate flag – it was the flag of a military unit that fought for the confederacy, but that’s beside the point…it was adopted by Confederate apologists and white supremacists after the war mainly because it looked better than the official Confederate flag.)
Anyone that believes the stars and bars are an innocent symbol of “the south” without implying anything more is oblivious to one of the most significant events in US history. I can respect well-intentioned simple folks, but that level of ignorance is hard to excuse.

Harv, folks can’t be an expert on everything – just too much stuff out there to know. They didn’t live in the south, so they really don’t care much about the history of the south.
If you care and study it, more power to ya. My folks have better things to do with their life than study the Civil War – things that have much more direct impact on their day to day life. I’m pretty sure there are other topics where they can run laps around you.
Your lack of understanding and ability to see other perspectives is pretty hard to excuse. I noticed that in some of your other posts as well.

Lol, if you asked any high school history teacher what are the five most important things to know about American history were, the Civil War would be at least two of those items. It was our most costly war and still has a huge influence on our country today. It is the very reason we are having this conversation.

I completely understand and see the other perspective. But I don’t view indifference toward white supremacy and other movements based on hate as simply another point of view, I view it as morally wrong. I don’t need an excuse from you in order to have ethical standards.
August 20, 2017 at 11:22 AM #807700FlyerInHiGuestAnyone knows that Confederate symbols aren’t about “southern pride” but about segregation. They were erected at the time to tell Blacks: “we don’t care that we lost the Civil War, we have segregation now and segregation forever.” Maybe the “southern pride” is being superior in an apartheid society.
Also, the Civil War wasn’t about states rights. One of the reasons for the war is that northern states refused to recognize slavery within their own borders so slaves were fleeing north. Plus rich southerners wanted to take their slaves with them on trips to Broadway.
But still, I’m OK with southern towns keeping their monuments. They do so at their own economic perils. They need to balance risks and rewards. Let the free market work its magic.
August 20, 2017 at 12:50 PM #807701FlyerInHiGuest69% of Republicans believe that Trump said the right things in regard to Charlottesville,
This is the Vice News video if you haven’t seen it yet.

I don’t give a flying eff what a high school history teacher thinks.
Cool. You pointed out what you thought of my folks. I just pointed out what I think of you. Turnabout’s fair play.

October 17, 2017 at 9:22 AM #808190FlyerInHiGuestWe witnessing the decline of western civilization with the rise of spurious nationalism. Russia, the UK, the USA, Poland, Hungary, Austria, Czech Republic. Sad!
I never liked John McCain but he said it well:
To fear the world we have organized and led for three-quarters of a century, to abandon the ideals we have advanced around the globe, to refuse the obligations of international leadership and our duty to remain “the last best hope of Earth” for the sake of some half-baked, spurious nationalism cooked up by people who would rather find scapegoats than solve problems is as unpatriotic as an attachment to any other tired dogma of the past that Americans consigned to the ash heap of history.
We live in a land made of ideals, not blood and soil. We are the custodians of those ideals at home, and their champion abroad. We have done great good in the world. That leadership has had its costs, but we have become incomparably powerful and wealthy as we did. We have a moral obligation to continue in our just cause, and we would bring more than shame on ourselves if we don’t. We will not thrive in a world where our leadership and ideals are absent. We wouldn’t deserve to.

In the not-too-distant future, people will look back at the horror that was the trump presidency and wonder who all these cowards were in congress who weren’t saying what McCain said. Who knew exactly what was happening but who were too craven to stand up to it. God, I hope they get what’s coming to them.
November 8, 2017 at 9:17 AM #808450FlyerInHiGuestIn hindsight, Trump may have been a blessing.
Trump unmasked the deplorables in our population so now we have proof positive who we’re dealing with.Trump has also shown us the stark contrasts between urban and rural America. People can observe for themselves and choose their future.
Sad for Hillary though. Women, however, seem more motivated and less likely to stand on the shadows of their husbands.
Considering the latest elections in Virginia, it feels pretty good to be on the right side of history. We shall see….
I kinda want Roy Moore to get elected to the senate so we can clearly see what the right wing is all about. It would be nice for a Democrat to win but Roy Moore will unmask more deplorables.

I have thought this too a bit, but only if we avoid nuclear war or other major irreparable consequences. His win (hopefully) jolted the Democratic party out of its complacency. Hopefully the Democratic wins last night do not cause those folks to relax too much.
Sad for Hillary though.
I voted for her, but she really made some bad decisions and in some ways did not deserve to win. Her candidacy did nearly as much for women as a win would have.
November 8, 2017 at 10:00 AM #808452spdrunParticipantI suspect that more suburban/urban women voted for Trump than you’d think. Why? Because he promised to keep their children safe from terrorism and crime — playing on parenting instincts is brilliant psychology.
November 8, 2017 at 11:39 AM #808457andymajumderParticipantPretty interesting article
says a lot about the core Trump supporters, but they are sticking with him and looks like no matter what they will.

I agree but that was last year. Things have changed a bit since then.
I would love for women to chime in on this topic. I think women are ambivalent about what they want. Full equality and responsibility or “protection” by men. With technology, I believe women can be anything they want. In fact they can have more power than men, if they leverage their assets in a deliberate, methodical fashion.
But you have the conservatives. I listen to religious radio sometimes and they believe men and women have jobs assigned by God.
I think right now women are upset about the glass ceiling and sexual harassment. Trump represents the good old boys’ club and the nasty, fat, rich, entitled old men. What woman would want to by f—‘d by that?
