Finances and financial issues are the biggest cause of divorce. That is true at all income levels.
Unfortunately at the rareified level of these people in the article “appearance” in all its forms is vitally important. Take away their “appearance” and who are they? If your life is built around being invited to the right party or showing off an obscenely overpriced art piece then small changes in your lifestyle are leveraged and magnified and you could literally live in fear.

We often hear the claim that financial issues are the biggest cause of divorce. But I suggest that financial problems are the symptom, not the cause, of marital discord.
More likely, the cause is two people unable or unwilling to plan, or to share financial decisionmaking, or to not resist rampant consumerism and advertising. Of course two such people will have financial problems, and our superficial news journalists will blame it all on the recession, or the housing meltdown, or that old favorite, G.W. Bush. Look for more such shallow analysis in the months ahead.June 1, 2008 at 1:16 PM #215106EconProfParticipantBobS
