I live in UTC and my rent has gone down in the last years. Now paying the same as in 2004. There are always concessions and move-in specials. Almost nobody pays the advertised price. During the real estate bubble rent increases have been 2-4%. I wouldn’t be surprised if rents in San Diego keep going down for a few more years. Many foreclosures have been picked up by “investors” so there will be a lot of competition.

Who didn’t meet girls in the laundry room or the parking lot of their college rental. In my rented condo that I spent a few years of my late 30’s, many of the women were divorced or single. Now I own again and in two years, the only women I see in my primarily owner occupied neighborhood are pushing strollers or sporting wedding rings. My sixteen year old son complains about the lack of talent at our community pool now that we live in the high rent district and many people have their own pools and the bathing suits contain more fabric. At the condo pool it always had a few women of questionable repute sunbathing with improperly fitted bikinis and interesting body art. So I’d say loser is not the correct word.

I’m purposely being a bit provocative, bordering on Troll behavior, for that I’m sorry if I offended. I will be nicer. I guess a forum topic like this is sure to get some responses, it was meant to. I’ve owned and rented at various times in my life. I don’t really believe that renting is for losers. As noted above, there are some great +s
There’s too much group think on this site. I think that many people are convinced that renting is always the best solution. Depending on your stage in life and financial circumstances, renting may the best solution. Isn’t it a bit valuable to peer into the soul of a landlord? Some of you may call me slumlord. I want people to really look into the pros and especially cons of renting. There are also negatives of buying that all those who bought in 2005 can attest.
I do think that there a large number of landlords out there who negotiate on bad faith or sport, most don’t.
Just remember always negotiate, don’t take the first offer. If you think your landlord is a *ss, get the heck out of there.
