I bought two of them, one for each hand. Seriously, I waiting in line for three hours on Friday and bought one for a friend, and one for me. Worth every penny and minute in line. It's truly a revolutionary device. As usual, Apple has done it better than the competition, in design and function. I bought one of the first iPods when it came out. People thought I was crazy to spend $300 on an MP3 player. I simply replied, if you want the best you have to pay extra, just like most things in life. Doesn't it cost more to live on the coast versus living in Temecula? Sure it does. Don't under estimate the iPhone and the genius of Steve Jobs. And I wouldn't be selling your AAPL stock yet. Wait until next month when earnings come out and they probably announce a stock split.
Ever heard of the phrase. Buy on rumor, sell on news? One thing that I have learned is that you can take a great company, that has great earnings, and it still sinks the stocks, because it wasn't "good enough". My gut is telling me that expectations are way too high going into earnings, and all short term wabbits that apple has seems to have been pulled out of the hat recently. So short or any new product announcements are a blowout quarter, I'm not feeling like we're going to see that much more room to move upward. But who knows. Well, considering that apple is 3x above what I paid, at this point I think I'm done. It's been a fun ride up. Time to load up on something that is a dog. Maybe I'll double down on Intel and Symantec right now. Oh yeah, forgot some of this has to go into the RS6 slush fund 🙂

If it was a limited edition amount then I can understand, but apple will flood the market with this POS. Funny thing too is that I never buy first edition of any electronic. I wait for them to fix all the kinks and add more features than being the idot with the glitchy one. Next summer this will be offered for $149 with a 2 year plan. Money well wasted.

July 3, 2007 at 1:19 PM #63647masayakoParticipantIt’s dumb to pay for a $599+ phone with a $70 dollar plan. Without high speed data, without GPS navigation.
That’s $2,300 US dollars + tax = almost $2500.00 for 2 yrs. That’s dumb investment, my friend.
I don’t care how ‘cool’ the phone is; it’s still dumb to waste money like that unless you are really rich.
Instead, if you invest $2,500 in stock, given the long term avg stock market return 10%, in 15 years, your $2,500 will grow into $10,443 USD. The opportunity cost for the enjoyment of your new iPhone for 2 years is at least $10,000 dollars, is it worth it? Heck NO.

Its only the difference that is opportunity lost…unless the iphone is your first cell phone and you would have never gotten one otherwise.
That said, $500-600 up front is too steep for me.

July 4, 2007 at 12:18 PM #63891cashmanParticipantMasayako, I don’t know where you learned math, but your methods of calculation are way off. You can’t take the sum of two years of expenses for your investment starting point. It should be the initial cost of the phone, $650 with tax, plus any premium in the service plan, which in this case is $20. Remember, you should fairly compare it with another phone, not the stock market! And any other phone in the same category as an iPhone, such as a Blackberry, is also going to cost you something upfront, plus a premium for the service plan. So what is the net difference? Probably a couple hundred dollars. Hardly worth planning your financial future on it. So go back to school. And buy the way, phones are not “investments”, rather tools we use to communicate and have fun. It’s OK to have some fun, isn’t it?

I checked out the new iPhones on display recently at the Apple Store this weekend in Fashion Valley. While the touch screen and video is nice I dont like an all touch screen phone with no keypad. My fat fingers had a tough time dialing numbers! That and the phone is waaay overpriced. Heck I can pick up a laptop PC for same money. I like the Windows Pocket PC phones with touch screens and keypads a lot better and they are $300 cheaper as well.
Also read in paper on how many suckers who bought the iPhone had issues with getting their iPhones activated! Must really suck if you pay $600 for a phone and cant use it, huh? Nah I say wait a few more years and see what happens. The phone is maybe worth $150 but definitely not worth $600 for the price they are charging people for it.

July 5, 2007 at 9:47 AM #63969AnonymousGuestThe really stupid thing is that my 2 year old HTC Wizard costs less (under $200) and does MORE than the iphone.
HTC has since made better phones.
Windows Mobile is not as intuitive (barely), but at least it plays MP3s, avi’s, mpg’s, etc. and supports third party software… software which, by the way, lets you make your Windows Mobile device (under $200) LOOK AND ACT EXACTLY LIKE AN IPHONE (except with more functionality).
It also has a slideout keyboard that is way better than the IPhone’s touchscreen keyboard… it’s actually usable and fast! But if you have a Windows Mobile device and you want to type slow it comes with a software keyboard that’s almost exactly like the IPhone’s (or you can have it be Palm style, or even just write the words on the screen with the stylus and it recognizes your handwriting–script and print).
The IPhone does have a spiffier screen though.
